What vitamin deficiencies are shown in fingernails?
I have a friend who is on a low-calorie diet.
She always eats lots of raw vegetables and fruits, but never eats meat, which her doctor tells her she should eat as much as possible. But she told me she doesn't want to eat it because she finds it tastes horrible. She has pretty long fingernails and they look very healthy (as opposed to the dry, cracked, brittle nails you see in those magazine ads). I don't think she's deficient in vitamins, but I'm not sure. What does she need?
I think you're right, she probably doesn't have a deficiency. I think if she does she's one of the first people to notice because she would be extremely pale. She may be deficient in Vitamin D, which is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be obtained from food or supplements. We also need Vitamin C, but we don't need a lot. The only time I see people getting enough is when they have high levels of stress and it causes them to eat more.
Your friend should eat meat and get lots of vitamin C. You can get it from fresh fruit and veggies. I've been taking a vitamin C supplement for years and my fingernails are as strong as they ever were.
What do protein deficiency nails look like?
I recently had a protein deficiency nail fungus (pigmentation nail psoriasis). I used to have regular nail problems, which improved after starting the regimen. I then developed a rash on my hand and feet, followed by an infected scab that broke open. My doctor took blood samples to see if my vitamin levels were too low. The results showed that I was not deficient in vitamins B or D. There was some vitamin B12 deficiency, and my serum homocysteine level was high. The dermatologist prescribed B12 supplements and the regimen worked well for several months, but then a new round of infected scabs appeared.
I am in a really bad cycle of nail infection. I got the usual yeast infection this time around, the white stuff all over my fingers and toes, and two weeks later I'm back to the infection again. I've also developed small cracks in the skin on my hands and feet. Is there anything I can take to help? Is there any kind of supplement that will help me heal faster?
In addition to a good topical prescription cream, a multivitamin/mineral supplement can also be helpful. But it is best to use one made from bioavailable sources rather than isolated nutrients. For example, a liquid multi-vitamin supplement such as the brand name Metagenics, which comes in several different flavors, or the brand name Vitalzym, which is sold in a variety of different flavor combinations.
One of the most common types of vitamin B12 deficiencies seen in patients with chronic skin conditions are pernicious anemia, and less often, megaloblastic anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency is characterized by macrocytic, macrocytic anemia, hypochromic, coarsely reticulated, and brittle nails. Hypoplastic nails are also seen. Treatment includes intramuscular B12 injections, but this should not be given without consultation with an endocrinologist. Oral cyanocobalamin (B12) may help some patients.
After 3 years on the diet, I am having issues with my nails. When I started this diet the first time, the nails on my ring fingers were dry and cracked. Now, after 3 years of following the diet, the nail matrix on both of these fingernails is completely dead.
