I've been thinking about purchasing a portable hotspot device and I was wondering if I can share the connection with one of my laptops that's connected to the internet through a wireless local area network and use a VPN through the laptop and the hotspot device. My concern is that the hotspot device will just act as a conduit to the Internet and won't actually be connecting to the VPN, and if I get a new hotspot device, I will have to purchase a new VPN subscription, or maybe the hotspot doesn't even work the same way as the original VPN provider. Is it possible for me to do what I describe? If so, how would you set up the connection from the client side? Would the remote computer need to be on the VPN network? Short answer - no, this is not possible at this time. Depending on your VPN implementation it may be possible to get VPN tunnel working from the WAP (wireless access point), but that only applies to VPN solutions which are compatible with a wireless access point. This isn't a standard feature and often has to be configured manually with the WAP manufacturers helpdesk. Most VPN solutions such as IPSec can't do this at all.

Other more comprehensive answers can be found by reviewing your VPN vendor's site to see if they provide specific functionality for creating "VPN clients" within WAPs, this is not necessarily done well. And it only works in places where your VPN vendor support having two WAPs.

If you want this function then your best option is to get an enterprise solution which supports VPN clients and configuration directly from the enterprise Wi-Fi or cellular systems. This is called tunneling and is something Cisco routers were built around from the beginning. If your VPN vendor did this kind of thing, then you could do this within minutes of configuring the router.

But I hope this makes sense - it is possible in the future that devices such as your WAP will be capable of handling VPN-type tasks, and you will be able to create VPN clients. You would always have to think about the security of the connection though.

My friend wanted to share his free hotspot, so I want to make it possible to share my vpn connection. I have rooted my phone, so I know there is nothing missing on that level.

I am not familiar with configuring a hotspot, but here is what I got. It's not working so far.

I have tried to install the Hotspot Shield VPN app but it didn't work either (I had never installed apps before but I was given hints on how it works). Does it need root and/or access to a specific interface (USB or something) ? If I just connect my phone via wifi, the hotspot is shown in Android and I can connect to it, but that isn't of any use to me. I already have a hotspot which I can use for internet but only one, and I want to share it.

I use iStunApp and you can choose between WiFi AP and Shared Hotspot as the interface. In Shared Hotspot setting, it will ask you to select the mode. For me, Shared Hotspot allows you to share your internet data, while WiFi AP allows you to share your mobile phone data (WAN and LAN) which is actually what I wanted.

So, to enable your shared hotspot, you can enable/disable the hotspot in iStunApp, set the access point name and password and voila! You are done. For what its worth, if you want to use a 3G/4G phone as a hotspot for other devices, you will need to use some sort of router. You could also share the hotspot that you have built by hand on your smartphone. It is done like this: Connect your hotspot to your phone (you have a wifi adaptor or usb adapter from phone to hotspot). Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi / Network -> Wi-Fi Settings -> WLAN tab -> Enable Hotspot. You can choose the name for the hotspot, as well as choose whether the hotspot is open or encrypted. Choose open hotspot if you don't want to use it on a network different than your own.
