Can you use a VPN on an Ethernet connection?
Many ISPs, like AT&T or T-Mobile for example, force internet connections through something called DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
This protocol essentially allows you to use any available IP address when it connects you to the internet. The internet then has the server set an association between the IP address and the name that the user gets assigned when connecting.
The problem with this however is that it is impossible to use a VPN on an Ethernet connection in the way that you would on a wired WiFi connection because as soon as you disconnect from the ISP there are no longer any IPs to assign. While you would normally just buy another router and switch to get around this limitation (I highly recommend using a bridge if you're able) I've actually found a working solution which will be useful in a variety of scenarios. Basically it's quite simple: just replace the internal Ethernet switch with an Ethernet to Ethernet port switch which will always assign available IPs even if you disconnect from your ISP. It works and has worked for years on older routers, and I expect modern ones would too.
In fact, one of the easiest and most useful uses is the following. You'll need: A cheap DSL Modem. An adapter to move your DSL Modem from an Ethernet port to an RJ11 one. You can get these from eBay, but you could even try and build one yourself as there are plenty of instructions on the Internet, even if they're rather hacky.
A cheap Ethernet to Ethernet port that turns one Ethernet port into multiple. A couple of these will do the job. We found the Moxa TP-EE01 which is a 4 port device which also supports 10/100Mbit Ethernet, 802.3x (Wakeon) for the port on the same device and PoE+
We then put this into an old router. After the upgrade however, we just plug the adapters directly into the port where the DSL Modem connects. At this point everything works as normal except that we've gained more available ports than before! The adapters will allow you to also connect other things to the router as needed.
Can I share a VPN connection?
If you use a VPN connection and your device has Wi-Fi and cellular (LTE) connections, you can use the phone data if the connection is over Wi-Fi.e. As the cellular connection is over the network of your ISP, it's impossible to know where the phone is.
Here's how to share the VPN connection: Tap the Menu key and go to Settings VPN. Tap the option for Share Connection. Tap OK. When you open the Wi-Fi settings, the VPN will be shown as Connected, and not as Unknown. How do I connect to a different mobile network in Canada? If you are in Canada, you can connect to any mobile network you want. The only condition is that you should use a Canadian mobile network. Some mobile networks may not be available in Canada (eg Rogers or Bell). If this is the case, check the availability of the network in your home country.
You can do the following to connect to a different network: Go to Settings Mobile Network and select the mobile network you want to connect to. The mobile network should have a small icon of the logo in the top right corner. If it doesn't, the mobile network isn't available in Canada.
Tap the menu key and go to Options Preferred Carrier and select the carrier you want to use. Now you can use the data connection over Wi-Fi if the cellular connection is over the Canadian mobile network.
How do I share VPN between computers?
You can choose to create a PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN VPN connection.
However, the VPN connection created for your main computer is not always available on every computer (eg laptop, workstation).
OpenVPN requires manual configuration. This means that the computers can have their own VPN keys set up (using PPTP), and be connected using different VPNs at the same time. See how-to video.
PPTP works automatically by default. However, most of the time you don't want multiple PPTP connections from two separate computers at the same time. You should know the reason why before creating PPTP VPN connections. There are several options available for manually setting up a VPN connection (see below).
This article describes how to share a VPN connection between computers. The easiest method is setting up VPN using PPTP VPN. PPTP is Microsoft's implementation of peer-to-peer VPN technology and it's well supported.
PPTP VPN is easier to configure than OpenVPN VPN for the following reasons: PPTP uses the Point-to-Point protocol which can be configured in an easy way by using WPS. WPS is the Windows Point and Print Service which is integrated in Windows 7. You can also use Wi-Fi connections in Linux by using wpstools package, but it doesn't give you a simple-to-use GUI and you need to install additional software, eg wpstools package on Ubuntu.
In this article, we will cover this step by step, including: Step 1: Adding a new PPTP tunnel. Adding a PPTP connection in the System Properties page under Network & Internet, is easy, just go to Properties menu, then Click on Connections, then Choose PPTP VPN. If you already have an active VPN connection, it will appear as new one under network connections. If not, you may just click New button at the bottom of the System Properties page.
Before you start, make sure you have at least one other PPTP VPN connection in case it doesn't connect. You will find out later how to choose an appropriate encryption algorithm that can take part in the connection. OpenVPN is usually used if you need full access to various websites or need to use encrypted protocols like IPsec or OpenSSL (secure socket layer).
