Is Running for You?

Is it better to run with long or short socks?

I use to run at the mall with shorts.

One day I found a spot that has a nice tree trunk and decided to give it a shot. The spot is about 2m wide and 6m long. I started running as fast as I could and it was pretty exhilarating. While it wasn't as hard as when I started I wasn't feeling any pain. The first half I tried to run between the tree trunk and another tree next to it. The problem with this approach is my socks would drag on the ground. This would be hard on my legs since they have thick black hair and I want to have as much coverage as possible.

After about 3-4 miles I gave up and went back to my original approach. What I decided to do was to run straight at the trunk of the tree. I did this for about 3-4 minutes and then looked behind me. I noticed the ground was clean and didn't have any debris. I decided to keep running and try it again. This time I ran right past the tree trunk and it was just as easy. Now I'm looking for new spots to run in. Do you have any suggestions?

I run in all kinds of terrain. Silly you, but it has never been easier, better or more natural than it is now. I run in grassy fields, on gravel paths, dirt roads and in parking lots. I even run in a mall parking lot! What I like most is that you are not restricted to specific times or distances and you can run when you feel like it. Sometimes I run alone, sometimes with friends or groups of people. I don't care who joins me. I have a lot of fun doing it!

I think you will find it much easier to run if you change your running style. Run up and down the hill, not at the top and then at the bottom. Then run through the grass, not over it. I run on my own trails at least twice a week and do so in the park, which isn't very hilly, a little up and down, but nothing compared to the hills here.

As you've experienced, running up hills is hard. But don't try to run them. Just walk them. When you start feeling tired, run down the hill. You will burn far less energy and recover more quickly. And there is no telling how many hills you have to climb to reach the bottom.

Are thick or thin running socks better?

I run in the morning and after work and I've heard the thin socks are best.

I've also heard the thicker ones are better. Is there a difference between the two?

It's been recommended to me that I buy thicker socks. I just don't know which type to get.

As far as running shoes go, which do you recommend for long distance runs? I've heard the Asics Gel-Kayano is good. But if you have a pair, which are your favorites? Does anyone have any suggestions for ankle braces that are comfortable and won't be noticed by others? The thickest socks are the most comfortable, but that's not always true. You can find thin socks, which are more comfortable.

Running shoes aren't very important, as long as they're comfortable. Braces are really only necessary for someone who's going to be on a stage for long periods of time or for someone who's going to be in a lot of physical contact. I don't think that you need them unless you're planning on doing a lot of public speaking.

The best running shoes are probably the ones that will last the longest. Just make sure that they fit well, so that you don't have blisters.

Asics Gel Kayano are the best all-around shoes. I have the K-Kayano 3's and have never had blisters on my feet, nor has my friend who wears the same pair.

Running Socks: The thickness depends on your foot, your age, your weight, and where you buy them. It's really a personal preference and what you feel comfortable with.

Socks are made for feet, not legs. Don't buy a shoe that fits your leg, because it will fit too tightly. Also, get a sock that has the roomy toe box. The "toe box" is the area where your toes poke through the sock, and it should have room to move around. If you put your foot in the toe box of a sock and then put the sock on your foot, you'll be able to tell if the toe box is too tight or too big.

If you're looking for a brand of socks, I would recommend buying at least three pairs. This way, you can try out several socks before you decide which one you like.

Why do runners wear no show socks?

The top of your foot, from the arch down to the ball of your foot, is very sensitive and can pick up the slightest irregularity in the ground, so wearing socks allows it to glide over the surface of the road or track without becoming caught on any of those irregularities.

The problem with socks is that they can bunch up in the middle of the foot. This causes you to lose some of your natural stride, since a tight sock can restrict your foot's natural range of motion.

If you want to try something new, however, I'd recommend wearing socks with holes at the toes. I'm not sure why, but sometimes you'll just get an itch there that you don't really want to scratch, but wearing a pair of socks without holes makes scratching that itchy spot impossible.

More Information. I need a pair of running shoes that fit well. Do you have a suggestion? When I was in high school and college, my favorite running shoes were the Nikes that came in the box at the grocery store. Of course, that was before all of the cool running shoes were made in limited quantities and sold at specialty running shoe stores, so if you have trouble finding a pair of shoes like that, you can always check out our Cheap Sneakers page.

As far as shoes go, I'd recommend running in a shoe that is snug but not too snug, that provides adequate support but not excessive support. This would probably be a shoe with minimal cushioning but which does not impede your natural stride.

I think that the best way to find a comfortable shoe is to try them on first at your local running store. If you can't find one there, try one online. I know there are a lot of sites where you can buy shoes online, but unfortunately, I can't help you with finding the right size.

I'd like to start running, but I'm not sure how far I should run in the first week. Is it bad to go too fast for the first week? The answer to your question depends on many factors, but there's no reason to worry about going too fast when you first start running. Running is a very individual thing, and no two people need to run the same distance in the same amount of time.
