I've been using a good VPN to bypass campus firewall for more than a year now.

At some point, I got a new school account that didn't have access to the VPN. Since then, I always use it to connect to the VPN at home first before connecting to my school. So far so good, I can get to every website or even watch movies without any problems.

Recently, when I was at home, I wanted to log into my school account from my laptop instead of using my phone to make sure it wasn't the VPN blocking it. I forgot the password and could not log in. When I turned on my laptop, it prompted me for the password but then it kept asking me for it again. I didn't know what to do.

I just found the WiFi at the library. It works with a password. I've typed it into the browser but still cannot log in. I guess I would need a password reset if I could log in there.

But if you actually did break the law, then you would be breaking the law no matter where you go. So there's really no difference between doing something illegal and being caught.

If it's in a public space, the government has to stop you. If it's at home, your parents have to stop you. That's just how the system works.

It doesn't sound like it's actually in a school, so it would be up to each state (and maybe school district) to define the rule for the school. Maybe if it's in an elementary or middle school, then it's not allowed, or if it's in a high school, then it's a different rule.

You can look at it from the perspective of a parent. If my kid is in a classroom or school where it is illegal to use the internet, then I have to stop them. But I don't think you can make that rule. It should be about the ability to get an education. If the teacher wants you to use the internet at home, then the teacher can require you to pay a certain fee or give up a certain number of free days a month, but the government shouldn't make the rules.

It's a grey area and it depends on the school and what exactly it says. At our school we have computers in the library which we use for homework and to research for AP tests. We're not supposed to use the internet on them but at the same time, we have access to the internet through the library wifi which we're not supposed to use. But as long as it's kept to the confines of the library, and no one uses the internet except for homework, it's not a problem.
