Can I create an Apple ID with Gmail on my iPhone?

One of the reasons that I don't have a Mac is because I can't create an Apple ID on my iPhone.

At least, that's what I was told when I went to do it and found out that I can't. If you can get it to work, please share.

I know you have to use a Mac for this but is there anyway to create an Apple ID with Gmail? This works great for me. Open iTunes and go into the Account Settings. On the Apple ID tab, click the Create New Apple ID button. You should get a popup that says something like No email address available. Fill out the form and click Next. You'll get a confirmation message and then be brought back to the list of your accounts. Now, add your Google account and click Done. Your Apple ID will be associated with your new Google account.

This has always worked for me and I haven't needed to do anything special. I go into my iTunes account on my iPhone and open the account settings. In the Accounts section, there is a drop down box to select your Apple ID and the options are as follows:

Create New Apple ID: Add new Apple ID, Create a new Apple ID, or Associate with another Apple ID. You can choose to associate it with another Apple ID if you want. If you choose that option, you will need to give the new Apple ID a name. For example, I named mine iTunes.

When you add the new Apple ID, it will bring you back to the list of your accounts. On the same list, select your Google account, and then click Done. You'll see the message that your account is associated with your new Google account. That's all there is to it.

I've tried to sign up for a free Apple ID account multiple times and it always tells me that it is temporarily unavailable.

I've read the following article on stackoverflow: but it doesn't help. What can I do? My bet would be your data plan has been terminated. Try reconnecting to AT&T or Sprint and try again. You can also try this online method and it should work if you are getting any kind of error from the site.
