What should my proxy server address be?
Hi guys.
I'm new to this thing, so forgive my ignorance. I was able to install squid 3.1.8, and that's working quite well. However, how do I know what proxy server address should my squid box be listening on?
Thanks for the help. You should be able to get this from the Squid Documentation or from the Squid FAQ. There's a lot of documentation around - if you Google "squid docs" and look for the "Frequently Asked Questions" there are also some questions answered there. As well as the official documentation I can highly recommend the O'Reilly books "SQID", "Squid Server Cookbook" and "Squid: The Definitive Guide". I have been using squid for over two years now, but haven't had much reason to look into the documentation, and so far everything has just worked for me. If you're going to be using squid on a regular basis then these books would certainly be worth having If your setup works well, and isn't costing too much bandwidth, then perhaps set up another host as a router. (If you don't have one already). This way, users can browse through the same internet you would normally use, and at the same time, they're surfing on a different network. Squid acts like a gateway/NAT router.
For a cheap router, you can go with the d-link DIR-824T that is on sale at most big box stores. If you want to be a serious web caching proxy, I'd highly suggest you invest in one of the bigger brands. The reason is that one of their main features is reliability. For example, I have 2 servers serving content from an ISP, one as a web cache (Squid) and another as a web server, they never even think of them as being separate machines. They're all clustered together in a single machine.
If you can afford it, the Netgear range of routers is very good. The G6, DIR-645, are especially popular, but they're usually pretty good. I've used all of them extensively, and found the G6 to be a bit unreliable at times, but reliable enough for my purposes, including for caching.
Is port 8080 a proxy?
I thought that a proxy would listen on port 8080 instead of port 80.
But that didn't work out.
I'm using Python to write to the server. I tried and the browser connects to localhost without any problems. But doesn't work. The browser always looks for localhost.
I'm using httpd to access port 8080. It is not a proxy, it is a server name mapping. By default apache will use the first hostname that it finds in the url and bind to it. However, if you need more control over what happens, then I would suggest looking into Apache's Name Based Virtual Hosts.
In the section above, there is an example of how to set up different domains on different IPs using A records.
