Is there a better alternative to Netflix?

A recent survey conducted by Netflix's competitors, Showmax and Hulu, showed that over half of South African viewers surveyed say they would rather have a pay-TV service that offered an extensive and more local content, instead of getting access to Netflix and other streaming services.

The findings were based on a study conducted among consumers aged 18-34. Despite this preference, many are happy to pay for a TV package that has been tailored to the South African market, with a selection of local content, even if it comes at the cost of monthly fees. What is local content? Local content is content that has been made in or for a particular country. For instance, there may be series and movies that were made for a specific audience. For example, there are certain children's cartoons, made for American children in the United States, but not really popular in South Africa. As such, the cartoons become very rare to find in local cinemas, and often they are only found on DVDs at expensive stores. Local content, therefore, can be movies or even reality TV shows, music videos, documentaries and short films. It usually is made specifically for the local audience. Where does streaming fit into all this? With increasing numbers of people using streaming services, is it time to take stock? Is streaming something that should be accepted, or is it an abomination? One side argue that streaming is the future of entertainment. People want to stream things whenever and wherever, whether that is online or through their phone.

But the other side of the argument is that streaming services are not as reliable as television broadcasts, so not always the best way to consume content. This is also why people still prefer to get a pay-TV package over streaming services, because they are so often disrupted. This is because streaming services, like Netflix, do not own or control their content, but instead they license all content from third-party content owners such as WarnerMedia, Disney and NBCUniversal. Many have found this method to be unreliable at times. A good example of this is when the NBA suddenly decided to cut off the live broadcast of any league games to South Africans.
