Do I need Orbot for Tor Browser Android?

I run the Tor Browser on my phone.

I was asked to use a non-free piece of software by some network admin. Is there any reason I should be using Orbot over Tor Browser? Is Orbot required to use Tor Browser or should I be able to use Tor Browser without Orbot?

Your phone has to be rooted for Orbot to function. This isn't something that can be changed by the end user.

I'm not sure how you're asking this question. Do you mean that you use Orbot as a browser for Tor? No, it's a separate client. So you could just install the normal Tor Browser and not have to worry about it.

If you are running it on your phone, you won't need to use the Orbot software at all.

I don't see how you can talk about how Orbot is a separate client if it's a part of Tor Browser. It seems like it's just an interface for Tor Browser.

ZedDec 21 '12 at 21:11. @Zed Not sure what you're saying, it does not seem like what you are describing is a part of tor browser. You're talking about Tor, but the two aren't connected. Your phone doesn't need tor browser to be installed, Orbot is a separate application.

If you Google for "Android virus", the first few hits are not the usual sort of search results. They are lists of people who have had their Android phones infected by malware. It is not only Android phones - other types of phones, including iPhones, are getting infected. But, unlike some of the attacks we have been following over the past year, the hackers behind these malware attacks are in some instances using the same techniques as attackers targeting web surfers. And since they are using similar techniques, the people behind them seem to be from a new hacking group called Goatse Security. The company is based in Ukraine, according to a Google translate version of the website, but they appear to be operating through other countries, such as the US.

"We see that people in our community are having trouble finding this site," Google Translate says. "Some people have tried to get to it through a search engine. We can't stop them, but you don't need to do that."

This site is also the same address listed on sites where people are warning others of the dangers of viruses and malware they found on phones. If you are one of the people having trouble accessing the site, here's an explanation of how it works, and what you should be afraid of.
