Can I trust the Brave browser?

In 2026, I found myself switching from Google Chrome to the Brave browser, after a previous foray into the world of privacy-focused browsers led to a disappointing surprise.

Now, when I'm using other browsers, I get a mix of the good and the bad. At work, I use Firefox for most things, but when I'm on my own time and use other browsers to view different websites, I don't know what to expect.

The truth is that, while I see many benefits to Brave, I can also see downsides. I found myself asking the question, ? And the answer is yes, I can, but there are caveats.

I also need to know what the Brave team is doing behind the scenes to ensure that the browser doesn't give me a false sense of security. It's time for me to take a step back and look at the Brave browser. This post is a bit like watching the car crash of a company. We have Brave, a web browser which seeks to compete head-on with the big tech companies, yet Google is funding the development. We have Brave who claims to be independent, but it's funded by one of the bigger tech companies in the world, then we have a company which uses cryptocurrency called Bitcoin that is claiming independence with that also being funded by one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Brave has its own ICO just to see if they can raise money, then the company is running this year's IEM tournament, which, by coincidence, also happens to be funded by Google! The whole thing is an incredible mystery wrapped up intrigue wrapped up in a web browser. Let's unpack it!

Who Is Brave Based In? So, who exactly is Brave based in? The official website claims: Brave runs completely independently of any particular internet service provider (ISP) or corporation. Which is correct, they do run completely independently of them. They even state their name right on their browser window: Brave does not use, sell or share your personal information. We believe in privacy and protect your data from prying eyes.

Brave is designed to be independent, so that users can have a browsing experience without being tracked. However, it turns out that the company is in fact registered in Singapore, but have a New York address. They do have a privacy policy to tell us this, but a simple WHOIS look tells us they have the same company name registered in both the UK and Singapore. It is worth noting that all internet companies are required to be registered with WHOIS in every single country, even a little country like Monaco if you want to do business. So this company could have chosen not to register in any of the countries that it intends to trade in.

Now, one company may do things differently than another. I don't think many people would argue that they aren't the best at what they do because it's illegal for them to not be there when the government needs to access certain records.
