Why does Netflix show a black screen when I screen share?

If you're using the Netflix app on your PC, Mac, or Linux machine, and you want to show a video stream from your device to someone else, and they see nothing but a black screen, it's likely because you're using the Netflix app on a computer that doesn't have a screen connected to it.

In this case, the person you're streaming to won't be able to see what you're watching on your computer, only that you're watching something.

To fix this, make sure you're using a monitor or TV that's connected to the computer you're streaming from. If you're using a laptop, hook up the monitor to your laptop via a VGA or HDMI connection. If you're using a desktop, connect the monitor or TV to the computer via a VGA or HDMI connection.

Why won't Netflix play on screen mirroring?

In the past month, we've seen a number of folks who have tried to get Netflix running on a Mac display while hooked up to a projector.

The best and worst thing you can say about this issue is that it's not going to work with an Apple TV or a Smart TV, but that's about it. It works with any display that's hooked up to your Mac. Even if you're using your own Windows computer, you should be able to get the same effect.

For whatever reason, it's not happening for you? You could have checked out the Netflix site for support, but you'd find no mention of mirroring. The only solution I was able to find came from Google Groups, which I'm assuming was just a fluke and was never meant to be useful in the first place.

That said, this isn't necessarily a Mac-specific issue. To get the same behavior, you'd just have to add an alternate resolution to the display's X11 settings (like in the screenshot above). If you have the option to adjust the resolution of your display, you'll likely be able to get this to work.
