Can you tell if someone blocked you on WhatsApp?
If you're looking for a way to prove who the real contacts on your WhatsApp phone are, you're in luck.
The new features in WhatsApp are now exposing your block listthat is, every number you've blocked or unblocked on your phone.
WhatsApp hasn't yet revealed how it'll make this possible, but if your block list is public (you can check by looking at the contact tab on WhatsApp), you can share it with someone else on WhatsApp and ask them to verify your block list. As we detailed earlier this week, the process involves tapping the four-dot menu button next to the number on your contact card, and then selecting the block option. You can choose to block that number permanently or just for a time period, like today or for the next week.
You can also choose to unblock numbers in WhatsApp. However, if you ever unblock a number, you'll have to do that separately for each number, which is very much not the same as in the traditional iMessages app. For example, in the traditional iMessages, you can always decide to unblock a number. If that number is blocked and you go back to the contacts screen, all of the person's messages will be grayed out. With WhatsApp, unblocking the number would just unblock that particular contact on your home screenbut it won't grey out their other messages or photos.
So it sounds like you can only find out if a contact is on your block list after you've already removed them from your list. This does sound like a pretty major privacy issue, even though it doesn't appear to be one yet. We're going to have to wait to hear if this feature is really available when the app goes live in a few days.
Here's a quick walkthrough of what you need to do in order to share your block list. Note that it's a little confusing because of the weird setup process. On my iPhone, I had to remove a contact from my WhatsApp contact listnot the iOS Contacts, but the WhatsApp one.
First, make sure you are able to see your contacts in WhatsApp. You may not be able to find the person you're trying to view.
What happens if you send someone a message on WhatsApp and then block them?
Do they get notified that you blocked them on WhatsApp or are they completely cut off?
This blog shows you how to get an instant SMS notification when you block someone on WhatsApp. Let's take a quick detour here and talk about the new changes to the blocking feature on WhatsApp: As of now, if you use WhatsApp web on your phone, you will get an Unread Messages notification on your phone in the form of a card when you unread a message. When you click on that card, you get the option to read the message. That being said, you can send all unread messages to your phone as well and it will come up in your inbox in the same manner (which is much better than having a card floating in the notification area).
The change in WhatsApp is that you will also get a notification that you blocked someone on WhatsApp (see the image below). As of now, this means that you will get this notification only if you get blocked from receiving messages. Once again, this means that if you do not wish to receive messages from a particular contact, it is time to block them on WhatsApp. So why send messages to a contact who doesn't wish to receive messages? Is that really wise? You decide!
What If I Am Blocked? Okay, if you are one of those people who always sends messages to contacts who are actually blocked on WhatsApp, let's quickly review how the notification system works. Say you are blocked on WhatsApp and you try to open the Chat Settings tab (the one that comes up when you hit the Home key) on your phone. As you open the Tab, there is a message displayed saying that you are already blocked. So if you want to block somebody on WhatsApp, you have to do two things:
First, open the Block tab. Second, add the contact to the block list. These are the simple steps that you will need to take to stop WhatsApp from sending messages to a particular contact. But what if you want to send them a message? How will you send that message? Remember that you can only send messages to contacts that are not blocked on WhatsApp. So, you cannot send a message to a contact who is blocked on WhatsApp. So, for the moment, you are blocked. So, what do you do?
When you block someone on WhatsApp do they know?
I don't know.
I've never seen an example of someone blocking another user in the official WhatsApp blog but there have been enough stories to suggest that it could happen. So, how can you block someone on WhatsApp? You can do it with a little work or use a third party app like Bloquowho.com
WhatsApp is an all-round messaging app that comes with lots of interesting features, but it also allows you to block someone if you wish to prevent them from communicating with you or even send a custom message to that user. Here are the steps on how to block someone on WhatsApp. Read below to know more.
How to Block Someone on WhatsApp: Step by Step Guide. To block someone on WhatsApp simply follow the steps we've shared here. Step 1 - Install and Setup WhatsApp. First, you need to install and set up WhatsApp and its app on both Android and iPhone/iPad devices. If you already have WhatsApp installed, go to Menu > Settings and then the General tab. Scroll down to Device Status and tap on Download and Install. Tap on Start to begin the installation.
Alternatively, you can visit the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store to download the app and install it. If you do not have the app installed already, it will take few moments for it to get downloaded to your phone. Step 2 - Open the Chat Settings and Turn On the Block Feature. Next, tap on Menu > Chat Settings and scroll down to Options. Turn on the Block or Mute User feature and also enable Message Forwarding if it's turned on.
Your message will be delivered to a certain address or another one you select but the recipient will not receive any of your message forward. Step 3 - Choose the Blocked or Muted User. Now, after you've turned on the Block feature, tap on Edit Contact Settings. From here you can either add the blocked or muted user as a new contact or an existing one. To add someone as a new contact just type their number in the Contact No. Field and then tap on Add. Once added you can then edit their profile to block them. To block them, tap on Block user, enter their mobile number and tap on Add.
When someone blocks you on WhatsApp, can they see your messages?
Here's what you need to know
If you think you can block an individual in WhatsApp, it's important to understand the legal underpinnings.
I spoke with Jennifer King, a professor at Georgia Tech's School of Law and faculty director of its Center for Cyber and Privacy, who has studied this topic.
Here are the answers to our most common questions. What exactly can I do if someone blocks me in WhatsApp? You can report someone, you can unfriend them, but you can't completely block someone from interacting with you, King told me. You don't have control over whether someone sees your posts or conversations. It sounds like a pretty basic feature.
In practice, however, blocking someone will have only limited impact. Blocking is just another form of 'unfriending,' King explained. If you ask 100 people the difference between blocking and unfriending, most people don't really understand it, because they don't get blocked on other apps, so they think, 'I can block somebody on WhatsApp but I can't block them on Instagram?' Isn't that silly? Kind of, but not really, because blocking in these kinds of apps is not really a blocking mechanism. It just prevents messages from being delivered by WhatsApp, but there is no way to see whether those messages still exist in some kind of unread state, King explained. So, for all practical purposes, it's not really that different from unfriending someone.
That said, the feature does have significant privacy implications. As a general rule, people think if you have an app, the company will store it on their servers and they're going to aggregate it and sell that data to a third party, she said. They think, 'Even if I'm not using that service anymore, I'm still going to be selling my data.'
But the fact that WhatsApp stores your messages offline in a file on your phone means that they might actually know much more about you than that.
