After downloading, you need to unzip it to somewhere on your computer. Once that is done, you need to install the extension. You do this by going to the Firefox browser, and then clicking "Tools > Add-ons". In the drop down menu, look for an "Add-on." tab. If you don't see it, it's probably already installed. Click the arrow next to it to expand it. You should now see any add-ons you've installed, and any that are currently in use.

If it's not there, that means it was installed from a different distribution of Firefox. If you still can't find it, you can try installing the Firefox for Android Beta for Windows, which may have installed the add-on.

EDIT: Since Firefox Mobile version 35, the Add-on Manager dialog will show any extensions that are installed.

Can you get extensions for Firefox on iOS?

We love Firefox.

And though the web platform is finally moving in a direction that makes cross-platform development more viable, Mozilla is sticking to Chrome, so it's only going to keep getting tougher.

The truth is that if you want to use extensions for any of your most favorite web services -- and yes, some sites aren't very compatible -- you have to either wait or compromise. We had to make some tough calls.

Mozilla wants Firefox on iOS. The whole Mozilla story, really, is that it built one of the world's fastest, leanest browsers by eliminating cruft, building a culture of innovation, and doing it by taking its lead from the mobile app space. It set up shop within a large but supportive company, invested in a community and has now grown it into perhaps the world's best open-source browser. It could use Android, sure, but then it'd have to learn how to be in a platform-holder role for awhile and that makes it less fast, lean and innovative. The company's biggest market -- for mobile users anyway -- isn't on Android, so Android users wouldn't appreciate Mozilla doing exactly what Google would do with Chrome: building an extension system with proprietary protocols. And if they really wanted support on iOS, and FirefoxOS, we know they would need to build it again from scratch. Mozilla also doesn't want to do that.

So, to sum up, as good as mobile can be in some ways, there are some tradeoffs that are unavoidable. And, at the end of the day, while the web does provide for portability, it doesn't provide universal standards. When apps are coming back in all their glory and web apps on the desktop are finally getting more feature-rich (for example, Gmail on iOS), Mozilla wants Firefox OS. But the truth is, it's unlikely any of our favorite services will be available on iOS without extension support, leaving us to pick one or another to keep it up for good.

So let's get a few things out of the way about extensions: They're great, but not everything is possible, and sometimes people build things that won't work well.
