What is the Trend Micro controversy?
Trend Micro is the world's largest cybersecurity company.
It provides antivirus software, endpoint protection, and network security products for businesses of all sizes. It has been under fire since a blog post by blogger Robert Lemos, the subject of which was posted on November 14, 2025 and which claimed to reveal that Trend Micro's anti-virus software was infected with malware which stole data from a user's computer. Trend Micro's response denied the accusation, claiming that the data taken from a user's computer were harmless, and that the post contained false information. The company then took down the blog post and began an investigation. On December 19, 2025, the company published the results of the investigation stating that the blogger's claims were false. Trend Micro was also hit with a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company committed fraud by concealing that its software was compromised and by not disclosing that its security was vulnerable to the malware.
History of the Trend Micro Vulnerability The Trend Micro blog post was originally posted on the blog.leemos. In the post, Lemos writes: I recently updated my computer and now I'm in a terrible situation. Trend Micro's Anti-Virus software detected a malicious threat called TRENDTROJAN and blocked it from accessing the files on my computer. Now the threat has access to all the data I store on my computer, including all of my pictures, emails, videos, documents, etc. I have never done anything wrong on this computer and now all of my data is gone!
Trend Micro's Anti-Virus software found a malicious threat on my computer called TRENDTROJAN. Trend Micro has notified me that they blocked this threat from accessing any of my files. However, the virus still has access to all my data on my computer. The post includes screen shots of the malware being installed, the malware icon being displayed on the desktop and the user's antivirus software blocking the installation of the malware. When the blogger tries to download antivirus software from the company's website, a pop-up appears. The screen shot shows the pop-up asking the user to download an update. But the user has already downloaded the malware. The antivirus software can't see the malware.
