How many times have you accidentally or intentionally mistyped a web address and then had to wait a few seconds for the DNS name lookup process to figure out that it was still something that should have been there all along? Or, maybe your ISP's DNS server is getting hammered with requests, and it takes a few seconds for them to respond? In either case, DNS can be a pain. Fortunately, you can use another DNS server to help you out. The first line in this post is a sample DNS configuration file that you can run in your own DNS server. It also happens to be a really useful public DNS server it was set up by my friend Daniel J Walsh and has been serving millions of requests since 2025.

The way it works is that the servers have their own IP addresses, and if you run a DNS server on your own computer you can simply point it at those addresses. This way, your computers can avoid having to deal with the network-level DNS stuff that can be kind of tricky.

You can get a free account at the OpenDNS servers and use them to resolve names. In a typical setup, you'll have the main DNS server (Daniel's) running one of your own boxes. You'll also run OpenDNS on another machine, and point it at your home router. That way, you can just hit the OpenDNS servers to resolve names when you want. (And if your router doesn't work, you can easily get it fixed without changing DNS servers.)

Why not just use Google Public DNS? Well, it's true that if you're not hosting your own nameservers you can just use Google Public DNS and never have to worry about DNS again. But it's also true that as the DNS server becomes more popular it becomes an important target for hackers who want to cause mischief. A public DNS server like Daniel's is a good target for DDOS attacks. So if you do want to run your own DNS server, it's a good idea to use one that's not as well-known, and that's what this guide is all about.

You can also use Daniel's DNS server to help you out if you don't have your own.

What is the proxy code for Psiphon?

There is no proxy code but it will use the browser you are using.

Is there a limit to how many users can use Psiphon? There is no limit on how many people can use Psiphon at any given time, but more than one Psiphon account should not be used simultaneously for obvious reasons. Is Psiphon private? Psiphon is private. This means that while you are using it you are protected from surveillance or IP logs being kept. It also means that it works on Tor.

What's the difference between Free and Paid versions? The Free version is limited to a duration of 7 days and has a 30-day trial period. The Paid version is annual subscription which lasts a whole year and can be used over and over again.

How can I get my Psiphon account to work with my VPN? You'll need to download your Psiphon account profile file, which is a few MB, in order to complete your registration. Simply click here and follow the instructions.

How long can I use Psiphon for? You can use Psiphon for as long as you want and it never expires. How does Psiphon keep people anonymous? When someone logs into Psiphon their identity is hidden by what is known as a 'hiding algorithm'. This is the same as every other VPN, however it doesn't keep your IPs secret. A hiding algorithm will take you to a public website (or website that uses cookies) then when you are viewing that website the website will add Psiphon's IP address in order to track whether you have visited that site. You should know this before you register, but you should know this regardless. It doesn't help to know it though, so be careful!

Do you guys track people? We do NOT track anyone! Can I use my Psiphon with a laptop outside of Psiphon? Yes, if you are using a VPN, you can use it anywhere on your computer. Simply install Psiphon and it will do the rest.

Does Psiphon increase Internet speed?

I recently heard that Psiphon uses your existing Internet connection, and as a result, can really boost Internet speed in some cases.

Is this true? I'd like to know if that is really the case, but first I have to figure out what it means.

Psiphon takes advantage of existing network connections such as WiFi and 3G networks. As long as your device has access to one of those networks, Psiphon allows you to share its network connection with other devices.

If you were on a WiFi network, sharing your network connection to other devices would actually make your network traffic slow down, since the more people you share your Internet connection with, the slower that connection will be. For example, you could be on a WiFi network and have 10 devices connected. Each device consumes around 60KB/s per device of bandwidth. If all 10 devices connect to Psiphon, they will all use 60KB/s of your shared WiFi connection. If the same devices used a shared 3G network connection, they would only consume 1MB/s of data instead of 60KB/s. Psiphon doesn't take any bandwidth away from your shared connection since it's not being used for data, only to give you another connection to share with other devices.

I can only imagine that it's because of what's called congestion control: every time someone tries to use your connection, they are told to "wait their turn". That said, Psiphon has no "connection per device" concept. As you use your connection, Psiphon shares it equally among the other users.

Is this a valid way to speed up Internet connection? And if so, how long would it take to become noticeable? I think I may be able to give you some more info. The way that Psiphon works is by using what is known as a virtual network tunnel. It does this by basically routing all the traffic over to psiphon where it gets stored and processed. As far as I can see the internet provider of you are sharing the psiphon bandwidth with the other connected users.

The main reason that psiphon doesn't "take bandwidth away" from anyone else is because we use your internet connection, we don't steal it. If you had a 100mbps connection and I was connected to psiphon we would both only use about 20mbps.
