Is the Internet an autonomous system?

If it's autonomous, what is it autonomous from?

On Monday, I received an email from the editor of a major news site saying that a story I wrote for them about a new technology called DNS over HTTPS (DoH) was unreliable and had factually incorrect information. I have never received such a response from a news site before, so I was surprised to see it from a major one. What I found even more surprising was that the editor responded in public by email, without consulting the other editors on the project or even checking with the reporter who wrote the story.

Here's the email, which you can read in full here: Hello Ben, I was a bit surprised to read the story you sent us. First off, we are a relatively news organization. I just joined the team about six months ago. I'm trying to find a good balance between getting the most accurate information possible, and being able to tell stories quickly, especially in these tough times. We just launched a few weeks ago, so our entire editorial team is still trying to find that balance. That said, we've decided to remove the story from our site. As a news organization, we have to be very careful about what we publish. In this case, the story was simply factually incorrect, and we don't feel like it adds value to the community.

I respect the work that you do, and I know that you strive to provide accurate information. The reality is that we as a news organization are always going to err on the side of publishing. We understand this, and we understand that you were doing your best to get the information. But unfortunately, the story was inaccurate.

We're always going to err on the side of publishing because we want to be able to provide accurate information for the community. But this doesn't mean that we'll publish stories that are wrong. If a story is wrong, we'll either correct it, or we'll remove it.

And if you have any questions about the story, or about anything at all, please let me know. Sincerely. The Editors. At first, I thought it was a joke. A mistake. A miscommunication. A mistake caused by a simple misunderstanding.
