What does selenium reduce the body's need for?
If you are on the selenium diet, ?
I saw someone mentioned that they were no longer needed, yet if the person who told them that was not a doctor, why would they say that. This is what I am afraid of. I do NOT want to die before I see my parents again.
Thanks so much. The article you linked to lists many ways in which it seems to increase longevity. Selenium is one of them. In general, the article makes a number of well supported claims and cites the research behind it, which I think most non-scientists can appreciate.
You should ask your doctor if you are concerned about your lifespan. In some conditions, this can cause a reduction of the need for thiamine, folate and some other nutrients, and this can have health implications.
What is the side effect of selenium?

My 11 year old daughter is having a hard time reading. She gets her books and sits down to read, but when the text gets longer she says she has a hard time keeping it all in her head. She is getting help with that. The thing is her eyes will start to tear up and her face will get red and swollen. She is also having trouble getting out of bed in the morning. We took her to a rheumatologist and he said there is no medicine to help her. I read where some people take selenium supplements to help with problems like this. I am wondering how much should we give her. She takes calcium, vitamin D and selenium. And she also takes Flax oil capsules. Does anyone have any information? We are not doctors and we are worried about her getting other health problems if we dont get her help. What do you think?
Yes, selenium is very good for helping with eye allergies. I have been giving it for years to both of my girls because they got really bad allergic reactions to something and selenium seemed to be the solution. Unfortunately, there have been some issues lately in research but it seems to be pretty safe as a nutritional supplement.
I would check with the pediatrician though because although it has been used for decades, it may not be necessary for all children. I have read where you should avoid giving it to an undernourished child (and there's certainly no evidence of that) and I also read that women who are premenopausal should definitely stay away from it since it can cause an increase in ovarian cancer.
I didn't use selenium, but I found that it had to be taken in pill form because it makes me very nauseous. I did find out that one brand I tried, called "Selinette", made you wait a few hours before each dose so that it doesn't immediately go through your stomach. My mom used to use a product called "Selenex", which made you take 2 pills (not necessarily at the same time) that went right down. My husband's grandfather died from lung cancer, and he always claimed that it was from supplementing his diet with those types of products. He eventually switched to the pill form, and that helped him greatly, as I've mentioned before.
Hi, I have a 14 yo.
Who shouldn t take selenium?
It s not for everyone
What s the story with selenium
I take it to help with mood swings and irritability . Do you? I have been struggling for years with depression, sleep apnea and fatigue. I recently added selenium to my supplement stack and noticed a difference in my mood, energy, and sleep. I also had zero irritability that I was experiencing.
Does this happen to you guys? I m wondering if I can attribute the improvements to selenium itself or not. I know it comes in different forms and brands (or even worse: different countries).
I take 50mcg of selenium per day in the form of liquid selenium glycinate which is liquid selenium with glycine acid bound to it so that it doesn t bind to proteins in the blood. It tastes pretty awful.
I think there are some people who can benefit from selenium and some who can t, and who knows what kind of levels they need or what effects they should expect. I was pretty sure it was worth a try, so I don t have a clear answer for you. I can t find any study of what it s really good for. You don t find any information on that when looking for it on Pubmed and the like. That would be an obvious starting point.
That's my thought as well. But I also take fish oil, magnesium, 5,000 iu D vitamin D, 1000 mcg folic acid, and 100mg CoQ10.
Do you want more specifics or more general advice? I can t imagine your daily intake is that high without any issues or side effects. I took selenium in the form of selenomethionine for about two weeks about a year ago. I did feel a little bit better than the previous time I had taken it but I didn t notice anything different with regards to my mood or energy level. This time, I tried liquid selenium glycinate for a couple of days and found it pretty awful. Maybe it has something to do with the source? I bought it from Amazon and have no clue what kind it is. The label says it s a mixture of organic selenium salts.
I m going to stick with my daily supplement stack.
