The streaming service has been available to anyone who pays for it since its launch, but it's also not hard to understand why.

It seems to be more than a Netflix clone it really feels like a television platform. I spent an hour last week watching the entire back catalogue of The Sopranos on HBO Max and it's truly remarkable how little content has been spoiled. Plus, there's plenty of stuff that's free right now.

Why do you need HBO Max? If you're the kind of person who gets HBO free on their TV via an over-the-air broadcast, you can already stream it from the app or through a device like Roku. If you have an account, you'll be able to stream everything else on the service.

The problem with these options is that they only give you access to what HBO was already streaming in its entirety for years. It's like watching all the episodes of a TV show on Netflix but without having had them ever shown on your TV.

HBO Max is the answer to that conundrum. In theory, this service gives you access to all the shows that aired on the platform. So long as you're subscribed, you'll be able to stream everything that aired on HBO and The Movie Channel (aka Cinemax) since the early 1980s, all the way through the present day. It's like a full library of HBO content, right on your screen.

How do I get HBO Max? There's nothing stopping you from signing up for HBO Max and using your existing account. If you're signed in, you'll see a bunch of stuff on your home screen, like a list of HBO content you've seen, current shows on the service, and a list of content that hasn't yet aired.

It's a clean, easy interface, and for those with an existing HBO account, it doesn't feel like you're going anywhere that's different. That said, signing up for HBO Max is not exactly a walk in the park. If you don't already have an account, you'll have to go through a rather long sign-up process. Once you have an account, it will take up to three days to sync everything that you've previously watched on TV with HBO Max, and it'll probably take two weeks for any new content to show up on your platform.

How is the Netflix library compared to its competitors? (See our review here. Despite Apple's early marketing claims, however, some are still skeptical that the new platform will provide an equally rich selection of content. But I can't say it has nearly enough content or a great user experience. But that doesn't mean it's not going to improve. It's very early for Apple TV+ My biggest issue is the selection. They need to add a whole bunch of great, marquee shows and creators. A lot of shows are already available, but no one is watching them why would you give away your show for free on iTunes? I hope to see more growth over time. I think it's about 20 percent of Netflix at best right now. I hope it's closer to 10 or 20 percent. It's a long way from being Netflix. Apple gets that, though, I think they're willing to work with a wide array of content creators to deliver shows to people like us.
