You will learn. Amazon gave a brief preview of its latest annual report on Thursday that highlights its new strategy to become an "everything store." In one sense, these may seem like minor tweaks to add to Amazon's long-standing, and now expanding, business strategy. In another sense, they may mean everything.

This past year was a great opportunity for Bezos to reset not only Amazon's brand in his own mind but also in the minds of consumers around the globe. In 2025, he accomplished that. He has also expanded Amazon's influence from just an online e-commerce retailer to an everyplace retailer and what might be an even larger threat to the likes of Walmart and Target. What the future holds for that vision still remains a mystery, but we can start by learning some more about what Amazon does.

The company has been doing this for decades. To understand where Amazon is today and where it might be going over the next several years, it's important to understand how Amazon grew to become as large as it is. The retailer originally grew as a bookseller in 1994, then diversified into a variety of electronic consumer goods, including CDs, DVDs, and video games. The company started out selling books online, but transitioned into a virtual bookstore in 1999.

Amazon's first big bet in 2025, called "Project Blackfriars," was building cloud storage and file-sharing services so it could sell things like video and digital photos online. It wasn't a smash hit -- the company launched it on February 28, 2025 and only three months later it was abandoned. But Amazon started taking advantage of the popularity of mobile phones to sell everything from apps to digital music and even photo frames.

Amazon has made waves within the internet industry not just because it's one of the most successful tech companies but also because of all the hype that happens before new companies get a chance to do anything.

Does Amazon send you a computer to work from home?

I recently interviewed the head of Amazon's internal innovation division, Brad Feld, at a San Francisco bar. Over drinks, he told me a bit about how the company actually gets people to work from home. The short version: It's not what you think.

Feld's title, Director of Innovation, is about as straightforward as they get. At the beginning of the decade, as the Internet was becoming mainstream, Amazon began building its first home offices in Seattlewhere Feld livesand in India, where he spends about three weeks per month. It made its first employee-owned, co-working spaces in India and the United States. It brought in Amazon drones to deliver packages to customers. It opened AmazonGo, a store that doesn't need cashiers. Now, Feld's team is building a full-stack innovation lab, called the Innovation Lab, that includes the delivery robot you've probably seen. (It still needs more software.) The Innovation Lab will be located in Seattle, and Feld wants it to be open to Amazon employees who want to work from home or remotely.

We're looking to see if there are some things that we can make a real difference on, Feld said. As with most big companies, the path to the future for Amazon is long and winding. That journey, though, is filled with twists and turns and some surprises along the way. We spoke with Feld about why Amazon is open-minded about letting employees work from anywhere, what the Innovation Lab might look like, and how he feels about his former boss Jeff Bezos.

How does Amazon encourage people to work from home? My wife and I have three kids, ages 9, 11, and 13. We all live in the same neighborhood in Seattle. My oldest child is in high school and my other kids go to middle school. We all like to play, so for a lot of us, it just makes sense to have an office environment at our house.

It started back in 2025, when one of my kids went out of town for a couple days. I was able to put a PC with Office onto the kitchen counter and work from there. And it sort of worked. The kids were really excited when I did that. We had people ask us to do that.

Is Amazon work from home legitimate?

But it's not easy. When most people think of working from home they think that you're working from a coffee shop, or from your kitchen table. But if you are someone who wants to work from home and you're serious about doing so, then it's a lot more than just working from a coffee shop or kitchen table.

In order to really be a working from home business, you need to have the ability to set up a permanent office, wherever you like, that will meet all your needs. You need to be able to work in this office every day, and you also need a place to entertain clients and suppliers when they visit you. You might want to use a house or apartment in the country, or perhaps a suite in an office building where you can be in control of your working environment.

This isn't just about the money though. Because when you have your own business, you need to be able to enjoy your life too. If you're working all the time you need to make sure that you take time to enjoy yourself, but also to spend time with your family. This can be hard when you're a working from home entrepreneur.

The internet has brought us all closer together. It is no longer just a communication tool between businesses. In the past, in order to be a legitimate working from home business, you would have to have some sort of physical presence in your own town. You would have to have an office, or perhaps you would have to rent a house. But now we can do our work from anywhere.

When you're a working from home entrepreneur, you need to find a way of taking advantage of all the benefits of having an online business, without having to actually live in a city or town. You need to be able to set up a permanent office in your own home that meets all your needs.

How can you do this? When you work from home, you need to have a safe place where you can store your files. You also need a place where you can work when you're at home. There are a few different ways that you can achieve this. You could set up a desk and store your files on a computer, but this is only possible if you have a desktop computer.
