Metamorphosis is defined as one of the four stages of amphibian development, an event that occurs in all species at some point.
The defining characteristic of metamorphosis is dramatic change in morphology, behavior, function and often life history. As a response to environmental stress, metamorphosis alters the physiology of the organism so as to more appropriately meet the demands of the changing environment. Metamorphosis thus gives rise to the idea of adaptation: animals can only be considered adapted to their environment if they grow into it. In many cases this leads to the disappearance of the animal from the environment in which it was produced, although some animals (eg, the tuskfish) are able to survive complete or partial metamorphosis.
Metamorphosis occurs when animal has grown for some period of time and has attained the age at which a new animal can no longer be produced. Although most species do not make the shift completely from an embryonic stage of growth to being fully mobile, even minute changes within this process will lead to substantial alterations of morphology and behavior. This type of growth is sometimes called paedomorphosis, with embryos growing into adults. Paedomorphic embryos develop as larvae instead of using the aquatic mode of growth, often with little other change in size or morphology. When paedomorphosis occurs, it gives rise to various species. For example, salamanders, fish and crocodiles are examples of animals that grow into adults without undergoing metamorphosis. This type of growth is also seen in the fossil record, and is what one sees in the embryo/tadpole stage.
Metamorphosis differs fundamentally from true breeding by having different ontogenetic trajectories (changes in growth, physiology and behavior), different strategies for dispersal, reproduction and life history. The difference is best understood in three stages: (1) The first stage is the ontogenetic stage.

The people who used to be his friends now seem strange to him. They are all strangers to him and yet, somehow, they are still his friends. One of them tries to give him advice and he thinks that he is listening to a human being for the first time, but it turns out to be a beetle. Gregor notices that he doesn't know how to use his newly acquired powers and he wonders if he will ever learn to talk.
Everything is new and foreign to him. It seems that he has been transformed overnight into a creature with a strange body, no language, and no social skills. A few days later, Gregor begins to understand what has happened to him, but by then it is too late. His entire life has been changed, and there is nothing he can do about it.
What are the 4 stages of metamorphosis?

In this phase, the immature insect enters a hard, dark, and dry pupal chamber. This happens when the immature insect reaches the egg laying and hatching stage. While in the pupal chamber, the immature insect undergoes a series of physical and chemical changes. The most important change that occurs is that the immature insect stops eating. Since the immature insect is no longer feeding, it is necessary to conserve its energy. One of the changes that occurs is the increase in the size of the immature insect's body. Another change is that the immature insect stops producing urine and excrement, which were previously used as food. This means that the immature insect must start storing its own energy because it cannot get any more food or energy from its environment. While in the pupal chamber, the immature insect also undergoes a series of chemical changes. In addition to consuming food and energy, the immature insect must produce enzymes that help with the metabolism and digestion of food, and produce other chemicals that assist in these processes.
