Is PG-13 family friendly?
PG-13 family friendly?
I've been a little torn on this lately. I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, but I also have a son who will be two next month.
When I was a kid, PG-13 movies were perfectly fine for my age group. Even PG-13 movies, however, were very violent and not particularly family friendly.
A movie like Shrek (PG-13) had cartoonish violence, but it was still tame and my son could watch it with me. If it had been rated PG-15, however, I probably would have said no way.
But recently I've seen movies like The Dark Knight (PG-13) and Transformers 3 (PG-13) which are incredibly violent and have very graphic depictions of sex and nudity. It's not just that I can't really take my son to see these movies, it's that I don't think they should be rated at all. I understand that parents have a right to decide what their kids can see, but I think they need to make that decision based on a movie's content rather than how it's labeled.
So what do you think? Are PG-13 movies always fine for families? If not, what are some examples? This has been a long and often-discussed topic on the board. I think there is a lot of truth in what you say about the PG-13 rating system, but not all of it is true. I would like to point out that there is an abundance of PG-13 rated movies that my boys love to see with me.
I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter series and the first three movies are rated PG-13. There is no sex or nudity in the movies, they are very family friendly and my boys enjoy watching them with me. If they had been rated R, I would have had to find something else for them to see. I think the PG-13 rating system works great for families.
As for the Dark Knight and Transformers movies, they are just poorly made movies that are not meant for anyone's children. They are filled with blood and gore and I think that is why they are rated PG-13.
My wife and I are huge fans of both The Dark Knight and Transformers and we really enjoyed seeing them with our children. We did not know any of this stuff going in.
What is the meaning of PG-13?
The PG-13 rating is a movie rating used in the United States and Canada.
It is similar to the R-rated movie rating but with a slightly lower amount of violence and sex. The PG-13 rating came about in the 1980s because many parents were worried about the children seeing some movies that had PG-13 ratings.
Who introduced the PG-13 rating? In 1983, the MPAA introduced the PG-13 rating. The MPAA set out guidelines on what movies should be rated PG-13. When the rating was first introduced it meant a movie that did not contain sexually suggestive or graphic language, violence or nudity. The movie Parenthood which was released in 1993 and went on to win an Academy Award, had an R-rated rating but it won best picture because it was an emotionally intense and touching story. The parents chose it to be the best movie of the year, instead of just the top picture.
What do the different ratings mean? Ratings are determined by the MPAA, and are very important in choosing which movies you see. Most of the movies that you watch are rated PG-13, PG, G and G. PG-13 movies are those that have very limited violence or sex scenes, or no nudity. PG movies have some violence and sex and PG-13 movies have even more sex and violence than the PG rating. Movies that have R-ratings have the most violence and sex. All of the ratings also mean that there is no profanity in the movies.
How do I know what movies I can see at the movie theatre? There are various website that can tell you what movies you can see. AllMovie lets you choose the MPAA rating as well as the country, language and genre. Allmovie also gives you other information about the movie. For example, it tells you the average age of the movie and tells you how many likes and dislikes the film has.
Does anyone else rate movies? People will have different opinions of what movie ratings are acceptable. Most people will agree on what movies they want to see but the PG-13 rating was not always the best choice.
What movie is responsible for PG-13?
I've been trying to think of the best movie for this category, and one that really stands out in my mind is The Godfather.
It was a little edgy, very real, and dealt with some serious issues. I know there were a lot of movies in this category when I was a kid, but those movies all seem to have disappeared from the list of PG-13 movies. I tried to do some research on the subject, and I came across a link to a page that showed that every movie listed as a PG-13 was in the top 200 grossing films. So I'm curious about that. When did PG-13 start being in the top 200 grossing movies?
To me, the biggest problem with this subject is that the criteria is subjective. How is it determined which movies are considered good and which ones aren't? I can't believe that a movie like Toy Story 3 would be considered PG-13 because it's animated. I would think that if you are going to classify a movie as PG-13, then you should base it on what the movie is. Is a movie that tackles the subjects of death, rape, or drugs like Braveheart a good movie or not? How many words should be in the script? Is it better to have sex or violence in a movie? To me, it's impossible to tell. As long as it's a good movie and people have fun watching it, it doesn't matter whether it's PG-13 or PG. If you don't like it, just don't watch it. And that goes for other categories as well.
What do you think? Is it possible to tell whether a movie is good or not based on the rating alone? Can you cite any examples that would show me how? As far as I know, Disney has not reclassified any of its PG movies into PG-13. I know you asked for a specific movie but I can't think of one that I'd consider good. If we look at TV and other media, that gets the PG-13 label for having nudity (such as sex scenes), bloody scenes, and lots of profanity (including swearing).
