How to reset Chromebook to factory settings without password?
I have a CR-48.
I forgot the password and was trying to reset it from the command prompt. I typed chroot /mnt/sda2 followed by the commands listed below. This is how I got into the GRUB console.
When I type ls I get this. Bash-3. Drwxr-xr-x 16 root 4096 Jul 23 07:29 . rw-r-- 1 root 381 Jul 23 07:29 boot. When I type df I get this. Bash-3. I am trying to update my BIOS.
You're already in your /mnt/sda2, you don't need to type /mnt/sda2, so just do ls /mnt/sda2/boot.
How do I remove previous owner from Chromebook without password?
How can I remove previous owner from Chromebook without password?
The problem is my new owner set the previous owner to "system". Chromebooks have been designed such that there's no way to do it from a normal OS, short of removing every bit of user data and installing a factory OS. The new owner doesn't own the entire device - the previous owner owned the login data which has been encrypted by Google. It's not on the disk that you can erase, it's in memory that is no longer accessible.
How do I factory reset my locked Asus Chromebook?
It asks me to login to Google play and factory reset it everytime I boot the Chrome OS. How do I bypass this. Asking for a factory reset doesn't work if I have already logged into my Google account. If I don't log in, it shows me that no account exists.
I want to factory reset my Asus C300 chromebook only and not my other chromebooks. As of now, it is locked, and after the reset, it asks me to log into Google play so the password gets sent.
If your Asus Chromebbook are set to use automatic software updates and the device is set to automatically accept, then you will get asked for credentials when you turn it on. You can press the escape key to get the reset dialog if it starts showing up.
If they are set to ask for credentials whenever you start them, there's no real way around it. You can try going to settings -> about, go to version information, then hit "restore". This shouldn't erase all your data, but it does erase all data and settings (except for the "sign-in to google", like you mentioned).
As far as I know you cannot reset it to factory state without an account. You'd have to wipe the entire drive. You could try disabling update features through the web browser (settings > security) or with the file manager (open the chromeos folder and find the /usr/lib/chromium/google-chrome folder and open it), search for "update.json" and delete the file. This will disable updates and will let you run the factory reset without being asked for credentials. As soon as you hit reset, update.json should reappear, and you can enable updates again.
