An input device is a device which gives information to the CPU (Central Processing Unit) of the computer. A common input device used in the PC is a keyboard and mouse. The CPU reads the keystroke information from the keyboard. The information is stored in registers. When needed, the information is used by a program on the CPU to move the cursor to a position defined by a keystroke.

Input devices, like hard disks, floppies and printers can transfer information to the computer's central processing unit (CPU). An input device consists of a computer chip which communicates with the internal computer functions. In case of a keyboard, an example of the device is an FPGA with a microprocessor board to process the keystrokes.

An output device consists of components which are able to communicate with the CPU through a digital, analog or mixed format. Examples of such devices are monitors, graphics cards, laser printers, speakers, mice and audio controllers.

The input and output devices connect with each other to allow data transfer. These transfers between one device and another are called Input/Output operations.

Input devices are used by the operating system (OS) of the computer to communicate with the user. This communication is done through menu selections and keyboard shortcuts. Output devices are used for a variety of reasons: as input devices, to present the output data to the user, or to communicate with other programs running on the machine, eg, to transfer the files to the hard disk.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but it covers most of the devices we'll be using when it comes to input.

All of these devices require one form of input; all of them also require one or two buttons. Some require an axis to operate, but they don't have to be axes. We're including a couple that don't have any axis (such as the Tilt Brush and the Joy-Con controllers), but they have buttons and are included here.

What about the ones we already have in the Switch? The Joy-Con controllers come with the option to add the gamepad's button to the top half of the joycon. Or you can get the new Pro Controller with extra grip, which comes with a USB-C port. There's also the Joy-Con controllers that attach to the joycon via Bluetooth, and they too have buttons. These buttons can be mapped to any button on the controller, or you can map them to each individual button on the joycon. As for devices that you can use with other systems, you can use any device that has physical buttons. You can also use motion controls or a controller that plugs into the system (like a PC keyboard). With motion controls, you have to account for some limitations. For example, the PlayStation Move controllers and Nintendo Wii Remote will register motion in 16 directions, while the Xbox Kinect will only register in 6 directions. In addition, the Xbox One S Controller doesn't use a full 360 degree array and thus requires less inputs.
