What can I use instead of a paint scraper?
I recently bought a car that has some weird swirls on the front end.
I am in no way an expert with cars, but it seems like it is going to be fairly expensive to get fixed. ? I have no idea what the hell this is. The top side looks like it has been hit with something, and the bottom side doesn't look as bad, but it is really hard to tell. Can I just try to scrape it off and hope it heals itself?
If you have a metal file (not wood, not plastic, metal), it's a good idea to get some white spray paint, spray the metal with a light coat and then scrape. You want to try and get it so it looks like the swirls on the car are filled in a little, so paint over the swirls. Let it dry for 24 hours or more and then buff the paint back up with a cloth.
That's how I got the look I had on my first vehicle. It was easier to scrap it off and start over, but with a little bit of paint and a few coats of paint, I can see how that's the route you'd take too.
I can't give you answer about whether it's going to work. I don't know what it is. I'd say try it and see what happens.

What is the best tool to scrape paint with?
My best friend has a good one with him.
But I'd rather carry one with me, but don't know how to make one. The best option I see is an air compressor, but we have no money for that.
"There he goes. He's really short and turns quite slowly. But there's no doubt about his intentions."
Billie Joe Armstrong on Sean Thomas, 1995. We have it. But it sucks really bad. It's a little electric engine with a compressor on the bottom of the pump. I want to use this thing so bad but that thing sucks.
Is a paint sprayer like yours made of air? It sounds like you could attach a compressor to one of those things and have a whole lot better tool." Well the idea is to make something out of it. We've tried making it before, we made this thing that you would blow through the wall, it's so lame. So now we're trying to design a pump of some kind. It would better if it has 4 chambers but since we have only 2, it would have to be a very big air compressor in order to hold enough air to fill each chamber. We have a motor shop nearby that can help us but it will be very expensive. But what we've done is take off the wall and build a tube to go from the center hole.
It's basically an old bike engine but for compressed air. And the pump and cylinder would still be in there. We don't have it working yet. That was our first plan for it. We were going to try and pump the gas up like in a gas can, but it wouldn't be efficient at all. But the piston is supposed to be at the bottom, but you don't want it to be too big and not work.
I just found out something that I didn't know about. The whole compressor thing works because it sucks in air, then the air goes to the tank and that way there's more pressure. If you put air into the tank, the pressure goes down because of the tank.
Can you use a paint scraper on wood?
The short answer is no.
There are certain types of wood that you can't use a paint scraper on and it's a very bad idea to try any method on any other type of wood.
It's OK to scrape small pieces off with a paint scraper, but you need to be very careful and only get into areas that are well-vacuumed, where there is no sanding required. Also, a paint scraper is not a precision tool and you'll have to work pretty hard to get an accurate cut. I have a friend who used a paint scraper to take out a few nails from a door frame he was building and the whole thing ended up falling apart.
No. Not even if you've taken the time to put the paint on the paint scraper. If you think about it, paint is just some kind of oil. And there's no way to tell how much of that oil will come out of a wood surface. You may as well use a drill or a saw.
If you really want to use a paint scraper, use a well-vacuumed surface. A paint scraper is just like a chisel, and will cut a channel. If you leave some pieces of wood between the cut and the finish, the finish might come off. It's better to sand the surface first.
I used a paint scraper (just like any other abrasive) to remove rust from the chrome trim around my kitchen sink. It worked fine, and was fast. However, it was impossible to cut wood, so I ended up sanding it.
Do you push or pull a paint scraper?
I prefer pulling and I've always pulled my paint scraper but over the past year or so, I've learned a few tips that can make doing so much easier.
The first tip is to use a rubber band as a handle. The paint scraper is usually too big for you to grab directly with your hand, so get one of those rubber bands for about 2-3 bucks at your local hardware store. The second tip is use the top of your scraper as the grip of the handle. Instead of your palm holding it steady, get the top of the scraper flat on the surface you're scraping. This may sound like a small difference but this means when you use your back hand, your arm will actually go straight down instead of up and over your head. It will also make cleaning the scraper much easier since you won't need to hold it in your hand anymore.
The third tip is to use the tip of the scraper to push the paint as you scrap. By holding the bottom of the blade facing the surface, the scraped surface will just roll out with the motion of the scraper. That's the way I originally did it but my hand would get sore in between scrapes if I held the blade the entire time. It might be different with paint in other places, though. The fourth tip is to use your non dominant hand when pulling the scraper across. This requires good coordination, but will give you significantly less pain in your shoulder and back than gripping the scrapers end with your entire hand.
This video describes the technique for using the bottom tip of the blade of a paint scraper. For details on the mechanics of pulling a paint scraper, see the video posted here.
A paint scraper is essentially a long metal plate that can be used to scrape a surface clean of paint. They're generally less bulky than a painter's paint mask and come in varying sizes. Most scrapers are approximately 12 inches in length and 3 to 6 inches in width. When selecting the right size scraper, it helps to compare them to the size of the work you want to complete. Some smaller jobs require more precision, while more demanding work can have a tougher time holding on to a giant painter's tape dispenser sized scraper. In addition to scraping surface finish, scrapers are useful for smoothing the surface of dried plaster.
