How to get username and password for VPN?

(Ubuntu & OpenVPN)

There is lots of information available on the Internet regarding how to get a username and password for a VPN connection (which in turn would be the username and password for each server). But what about doing it in Ubuntu? Well, the easy way, which does not involve any configuration files editing and stuff, is doing it through the GUI.

However, since I am more of a terminal / CLI kinda guy, I will explain how you can configure a VPN and login on each server through your standard Linux installation (as opposed to doing it in a Virtual Machine or otherwise outside of the Linux OS.) The instructions below are based on connecting to a SonicWall network with OpenVPN.

Step 1: Create user, edit /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow (recommended). Log into your normal user and run this command in the Terminal. Sudo -i.e. Root@ubuntu:~# cd /home/yourname. Root@ubuntu:/home/yourname# passwd. New password for yourloginname. Retype new password for yourloginname. Passwd: password updated successfully. Root@ubuntu:/home/yourname# exit. Now create a new account for the user you'll connect to with the username and password you want to use. This is what is called a shadow user. Use this command for that.

Root@ubuntu:~# useradd -c "Connection user" yourname. Root@ubuntu:~# passwd yourname. New password for yourusername. Retype new password for yourusername. Adding new user `yourname' . Creating home directory `/home/yourname' . Copying files from `/etc/skel' . Enter new UNIX password for yourname: Retype new UNIX password for yourname: passwd: password updated successfully. Root@ubuntu:~# exit. Step 2: Logging into each server with username and password. Note: If you want to be able to access the machine without having to enter a username or password. You may have to setup Sudoers. However, I am not going into the setup of Sudoers.
