Why does Netflix say you seem to be using a VPN or proxy?

Why does Netflix say you seem to be using a VPN or proxy?

I was recently getting a "Netflix seems to be using a VPN or proxy" error when I was attempting to watch a video on Netflix.

This problem only occurred on my phone and on some other phones I own. My main computer also is using the same router that connects to the internet and also has Netflix on it. I use the Netflix app, not the website. I am not sure why this is happening but I did notice that I have no internet connectivity at all when I try to watch videos. I am in Canada and I can't watch any of the videos on Netflix.

So far I have: Ran the app on a couple phones and it works perfectly. I have rebooted the phone several times and the issue still persists. I was only able to watch a single video on my phone. My main computer isn't having any internet issues, and I am still able to watch Netflix on it. I had this exact same problem. It turns out the VPN connection on my phone was being turned off after a while by my router's settings. This resulted in it never connecting to the VPN, and eventually giving up when it couldn't access Netflix.

Go into your router's settings, find the VPN/proxy settings and set them to on, for both IPv4 and IPv6. I'm using the Rogers XpressVPN plan (free to use), and they automatically turn it on for me.

Why can't i log into Netflix with NordVPN?

I have no problems using a non-nordVPN provider, but Netflix only works if I'm connected via one of their VPN servers (US ones). I've contacted NordVPN multiple times and they've all claimed it is functioning fine on the VPN. They won't help unless I give them the server name so I'm very skeptical. Do they actually have a solution?

I have no problems using a non-nordVPN provider, but Netflix only works if I'm connected via one of their VPN servers (US ones). The server name is simply the first 4 numbers in the URL (example: nordvpn-us-nyc-6b1c6d). If you're concerned at all, try connecting with a different server.log file from your NordVPN client to our support desk.

Sorry the server name is wrong for you, I didn't check the correct server name since I don't plan on changing my VPN ever again. So what do I do about the problem? Is there anything besides their stupid app? I would hate to just give up on Netflix for good, because their UI sucks.

The solution is simple enough. Simply create a brand new vpn account using the Nordvpn website. Once this is done, login into your existing account and delete the current connection, this will prompt you to create a new account which will essentially do the same as your current account, however the only catch is you need to delete the app you are using before you can do this.

You must also wait a couple of minutes to actually delete the Nordvpn account which is probably why they have been ignoring you and not answering your questions. Once you are done doing this, your Nordvpn connection will work like a regular connection. The only thing different about it is that Nordvpn servers will be used to route traffic to Netflix. Once this has been implemented it will work every time.

The most secure solution is to change your DNS settings to something else. However, if the above solution does not work for you there isn't much I can do.

How do I unblock Netflix on NordVPN?

I tried to find the answer on the NordVPN website and NordVPN support pages, but they don't seem to have anything about that.

I am connected to a server in Canada. But Netflix servers are in US. So how do I unblock Netflix in NordVPN?

I was using NordVPN before now (the free version). But I didn't like it because they blocked other websites in the free version and when I upgrade to premium version, they charged me a lot of money. That's why I decided to try another VPN which doesn't block any websites.

Unfortunately, I believe that all of our servers are located in various regions around the world. The only exception to this is our Singapore VPN server, which will allow you to access Netflix from Asia. You can read about this option here:

You could also try a free VPN service from Tunnelbear or TunnelBear that do not block any websites. I believe that both of these services work with Netflix, so it might be a great option for you if you want to try it out.

Answered August 25, 2025 6:28 am. @Tiger4Life. It should be working fine if you're in a location that NordVPN has a server in. Please make sure that NordVPN is using a US-based server in the region where you're connecting to. That is to say, if you're in the United States, check that NordVPN has a US-based server in the United States.

If you're unable to connect to the server, you can always use the IP address of the server instead.
