Is Windscribe Chrome extension safe?

A recent post over at the PC Perspective blog prompted me to revisit Windscribe and one of my complaints that I still have about their service is that they use Chrome extensions (which I will not elaborate on but you can do your own searching if you're interested). I can tell from their page that this extension, Windscribe Secure VPN Proxy Beta, has been updated to v2.0 yesterday and what I'm wondering if it's just me or if this latest version doesn't work either. I'm using it right now and as far as I can tell there aren't any problems with the last version however. But I'll be more familiar with the new version once I use it for a few days.

Anyway, for those of you who use the Windscribe VPN service here are some of my thoughts: I don't use their "Free" version even though it allows me to keep all the benefits of the premium service (including logging/data collection etc.) so don't feel I'm bashing them too much when I say that. They charge for VPN and they should probably have a paid version where you don't have to give so much info.

The service seems to work well for my needs on Windows 7 and 8 however I cannot attest to its performance on Windows 10 (and therefor haven't been able to try it on a laptop I currently have). They claim it's better but I'll reserve judgement until I know more.

You really need to be careful when downloading the .crx files that you trust and get those directly from them rather than from 3rd party places like BitNami or other similar services.

Using the default settings for their "Free" version means that you are vulnerable to logging and being tracked by whoever is monitoring your internet traffic. You can see and make changes for yourself on their website.

Since it uses Chrome extensions I thought it would be safe but just as with any free web browser if someone you don't trust gains access to your cookies and other data then they can make requests to logins to your account. I haven't been able to test this but I was under the impression that if you use the Firefox browser you aren't giving those details either which is what keeps you from accessing your account on services like Twitter etc. (since your logged in and can see and update your status).

Does Windscribe leak data?

Hi All, I had a question on the data that is collected by Windscribe.

I'm not sure if the data is sent to the server or not. If it's not sent, then why are they able to track my data usage? Also, if they are tracking my data usage and they are sending it to the server, how would I be able to stop that from happening? Thanks

Hi All, I had a question on the data that is collected by Windscribe. Thanks You can't, unless you pay them to let you. There is a lot of information on this thread already.

Ok, thanks for the response. They can only track data usage when you are using Windscribe. If you are not using Windscribe, they cannot see how much data you are using.

I've just signed up with Windscribe (as a client), to see how it works. I don't have an account at the moment, but will be buying the service at some point in the future.
