Do I need a Roku if I have a smart TV?
I plan on getting the Roku Ultra with my 40 inch 4k Smart TV I have recently acquired.
The only reason for me is, when I'm watching something on Netflix and I hit pause to change to another show, it resets the position of the mouse cursor on the remote. My tv does not have this feature. If I connect my cable remote to a smart TV, will that keep the trackpad from resetting?
Do you have any experience getting a Roku box to work with a 4K (or higher resolution) TV, specifically Samsung? Specifically a 40-50 inch TV such as the new Samsung Q40. I assume connecting your Roku to your TV would be possible using HDMI or something like that. I have no experience, so please fill me in if you can on any issues you might have in setting up a particular model.
You could also just get a Chromecast. Works well with many of these TVs as well as Apple and Android devices. You will be able to stream Netflix, Amazon, and Youtube to these (although Youtube is lacking content yet for me). They also provide a browser.
If a Chromecast doesn't work for you, I'm surprised about that, since it's quite similar and it's much cheaper. The biggest limitation is what I noticed with the 40" Q40 and maybe the Q40 or the smaller ones too. When it is 4K (or UltraHD), your TV screen just has very little black area next to the edge of the screen. The entire edge is taken up by the Roku box. You need to put the Roku player in the middle of the TV screen.
There are 2 ways around this. I tried both of them. The first way, with the HDMI cable, has always worked, but the second way sometimes did and sometimes didn't. When it would work, if I used HDMI cable only, then I'd have to set it up again. Some users have gotten it to work by using the HDMI connection and an extension cord plugged into the power socket.
I am curious if other people here also had trouble when the Roku was not exactly centered. Maybe it would work as you'd move the player into the right place. It never did work when it was not positioned exactly as above. Just in case there was anyone else out there who had the same problem.
