Is TradingView really free?

A new kind of financial literacy

I just downloaded the app and was about to start trading.

After a quick look at what they were offering, I was shocked that it is completely free. They say that they are not selling anything - but do they really need to say this?

I realize this is a pretty small thing, and some people will appreciate the fact that they are offering free access to a trading platform - but it struck me as kind of cynical. If I really want to trade, why should I believe that it's 'really free'? When I first opened the app, I was greeted with a picture of the stock market map from their homepage. On the left, they have some sort of indicator for price - there is nothing to click on, no place to open it, just a static image. It's actually quite hard to know where it leads.

Then, you are asked to enter your login information. Here is the scary part: they ask for your Facebook account information. There is no way to remove your password, but this is what makes the app truly free. When I tried to access my account, I had to put in my name and my email address. After entering my password and doing a bit of waiting, I got the following error: "User not found" - I was not logged in.

It then said I needed to verify my account, but there was no way to do that. It does provide a way to create a random email address for me to use in case I needed to verify my account - but it also said that the email address I gave was invalid. So, the point of all of this is that it is not really free. They are making a huge assumption - that I am already willing to give up my Facebook information.

A real, independent trading platform would ask for less personal information (or at least, it would be optional). You can view the source code to check if there is some special secret sauce going on - but there really isn't anything except what they provided for me. Nothing special here. Just a simple way to get access to your own trading account and a simple web page to track your trades. I don't think it's fair to call this free.

If this is a financial literacy site, then isn't it supposed to help people figure out if they are being taken advantage of?

How do I log into my TradingView account?

You will see the account name as shown in the following screenshot: ## Chapter 3 - Chart Style Setup. "Chart style setup." - Bill Baruch, Author and Chartist ### What Is Chart Style Setup? When it comes to preparing our data before our charts, we want to try to find the perfect ratio of background and color. One could make the argument that if you're using an actual stock chart, you don't care about the background or colors. But using these options and adjusting your colors according to charting conventions can definitely enhance the appearance of your data, thus improving the overall aesthetic experience of your trading charts.

#### Background Colors for Technical Analysis. Most Technical Analysis (TA) strategies focus on volume and patterns that occur in a price level. Traditionally, TAs use technical backgrounds that are white or otherwise have a white background for a more easily readable visual. White background colors include pastel tones like blue, gray, or pink; beige; brown, tan, or gray; and grayish-brownish colors.

When using a blue- or grayish-blue background, you want to keep the text contrast from becoming too high. Otherwise, when a light or dark blue color is used, many types of text look washed out. When using a beige background color, you want to keep the contrast of your data from being too high, and still maintain the appearance of the background. Gray-tinged beige or shades of white, gray, and beige are some of the better grayish-beige-color backgrounds that would work well with most Technical Analysis data sets.

It's best to not overwhelm your chart or trading strategy with too many colors on a single background. You can play around with different backgrounds, different colors, and even different font styles until you find the best blend. If you need to use a pastel-colored background, you might also want to adjust the lightness and saturation of the color so that it doesn't overwhelm your charts.
