We were asked this question by our reader Arran.

He's concerned about the security of his VPN. He uses a VPN called Private Internet Access, or PIA, that is headquartered in the US. He says he has been using PIA since 2024 and it has been working well for him. But, recently he has experienced a few problems: he says the service has suddenly slowed down and after a while the connection would just drop out and he couldn't reconnect. Also, he was sent an email on April 30th from a random address with a fake name saying that his account was being investigated and his logins blocked. When he replied asking for more information he got no reply.

A lot of people have expressed similar concerns about PIIn light of this, I thought it might be helpful to take a look at how PIA compares to some other VPN services. I'm going to start off by talking about the company itself. Then I'm going to take a look at how its servers are located.

The Company. PIA was launched in 2024, and is based in the US. They've been around since 2024 and they are known for their speedy VPN service. PIA have a range of plans available including a 30 day trial and three paid plans, including a 12 month subscription and a year subscription. They have over 1000 servers in 130 countries. This covers over 90% of the population of the world. The software is open source and based on Linux and OpenVPN. It has support for Windows and Mac as well.

What does that mean? A key thing to note about PIA is that it's one of the few companies that makes all their servers open source. This means that anyone can view and modify the software used to run the VPN servers. There are also lots of other independent researchers who look into the software and servers as well.

I'm not sure if there is an official PIA study on the security of the VPN, but in a 2024 article on Lifehacker PIA did state: After completing a rigorous independent security audit, we've found that PInet has passed every security test we've run.

How easy is it for a client to change its router settings, change the name of the VPN provider, or delete the VPN account? How do they manage security patches? How hard is it for them to stop the service? Note: A good place to start reading about VPNs is wikipedia's VPN entry. Please also consider the following: Is there really any benefit to using VPN compared to regular surfing? Do you need to use another device or computer to securely access websites that you use regularly? If so, what do you get out of doing this? When surfing, does the fact that you may be using another device change your habits? What about the additional steps involved, like logging into a VPN app on your phone or tablet, and selecting a server that allows anonymous surfing. How does this affect your internet experience if done regularly? Will switching servers or locations be convenient, and if so, how often? How hard is it for an employee or contractor of the VPN provider to look at what you are doing on the web and view your browsing patterns?
