We can't make networks safe, we need technologies to do that. Bypassing the network security model means not applying all network security features to a device or application. What does this research involve? In our study, we identified 15 applications that bypasses, overrides or doesn't properly apply the default network security features to protect against local attacks, and we measured which of them are vulnerable. We also tested whether or not these 15 applications are considered a significant source of vulnerabilities. Using the findings, we developed guidelines to keep applications and systems secure. In other words, how does the average network admin handle their system? Is your system secure? We analyzed applications built by Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
Why are so many applications vulnerable to bypass attacks? Many of the insecure applications that we studied are targeted for enterprise environments. For example, when developing mobile apps for the enterprise, developers often overlook security best practices. They want to ship apps quickly and are reluctant to sacrifice time debugging app flaws. This is where the problems arise. Many of these insecure applications rely on a flawed security model designed to protect from remote attacks, not from local attacks.
