Who are the Five Eyes security partners?
The Five Eyes are secret intelligence alliance between Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
They were formed in 1941 as a group of allies committed to sharing military and diplomatic information, as well as intelligence personnel for joint operations and surveillance.
Five Eyes security partners in the public sector, such as Transport Canada, Immigration Canada, Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), Canada's National Defence Headquarters, Canadian Forces and Defence Intelligence, are not exempt from the Five Eyes' network of intelligence gathering. While their roles and missions are often not fully divulged, they nonetheless operate within the same global environment. Some Canadians have also voiced their opinions on privacy and their lack of trust in a Five Eyes partner.
How can Five Eyes partners use the Canadian Privacy Act to protect Canadian privacy? The Canadian Privacy Act (CPA) was created to ensure Canadians' personal information is kept private. The CPA protects individuals by regulating the collection and use of Canadians' personal information in various public sectors, including intelligence. However, it is the responsibility of a Five Eyes partner to ensure that Canadians' privacy and the CPA are being respected and protected by the partner at all times.
It's important to remember that the CPA requires that intelligence officials must request consent from Canadians to share any of their personal information. And if intelligence information is gathered, it must be obtained with the consent of the Canadian, unless otherwise exempted.
Under the CPA, the CBSA can issue a special access authorization if the information collected could have an effect on Canadian lives or property. A special access authorization allows the CBSA to search Canadians, even those on Canadian soil, if they suspect there is a threat to their safety. For more on special access authorizations, see our Guide to Special Access Authorization.
Why might you not need a special access authorization? A special access authorization does not mean that a Canadian's identity can be revealed without their consent or that other personal information or communications can be gathered without their knowledge. If a Canadian's personal information is gathered without the consent of the individual, it is considered unlawful information. It is also highly problematic if this type of data is sold without an opt-in process, which would typically require consent to do so.
Why are they called Five Eyes?
Each of the five countries is represented by at least one and usually two members of parliament, one senator and one political party.
At least two are also members of the European Union.
For the citizens of the four nations, their ties are not quite as tight as for those of the UK and US. For example, the Canadian population includes immigrants from many European countries.
While English is spoken in Canada and used for official documents, other languages, like French and German, are used more commonly by the immigrants. Canadian citizens who can trace their ancestry back a few hundred years often refer to Canada as 'Old England' or 'The Mother Country.' They believe that they share a common heritage with England despite a long history of cultural and economic isolation and that their language, culture and legal system should mirror that of England. Canada's first prime minister, Sir John Macdonald, stated: We are a branch of the British stock, and we have an interest in maintaining the great moral power of Great Britain. We cannot do it without Great Britain; we can't go out of Great Britain and do anything with advantage to our own government.

It is a special relationship between two Hindu holy rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna in the Indian subcontinent.
This relationship or union has given rise to two major religious institutions - one of the oldest in India, and one that developed very recently. The oldest of them is the famous "Kerala" or "Calicut" (now known as Kozhikode), in Malabar which is referred to as 'the southernmost region of Keralam'. In the first century D., the apostle Thomas visited Kerala at this place and met the local residents who were Christians. St. Thomas also preached Christ to the local villagers who accepted him as a true messenger of Christ. The Christian Church then flourished here, later renamed 'Moorutta', and was an important seat of learning. Later on, 'Malankara' (lit. "little Italy"), became part of the state of Travancore-Cochin, which is located further down on the west coast.
Kerala is a famous center of pilgrimage, where hundreds of thousands of devotees visit every year. It has a number of holy sites, like Thiruvathikal, Guruvayoor, Thekkekkara Temple, etc. The most famous ones are "Pazhaya" (literally the 'Seven Hills') and "Kadathukulangara".
The other major religious institution is 'Nerapunisharam', which was built in the 14th century by King Vira Narasimha Raya of Badami of the Yadava dynasty. It is situated on the banks of the river Ganges in Bengal, about two miles from Bhagalpur. Some 500,000 people come here on a day pilgrimage from all over the world, visiting every part of the edifice, including the tombs of two Hindu 'saints', 'Srirama' and 'Visvamitra'. One of the best places to see the edifice is from the roof of the 'Sri Rama temple', which is the highest point of the 'Virasad' building.
Both Kerala and Nerapunisharam are major pilgrimage centers, but the two regions are linked in another way. Both are members of the 'Hindu-Cultural Federation'(HCF) (sometimes also called 'Gurudeva Sangam').
