How to download via Linux command?

I'm on a unix based server (no gui) and need to know the best way to download a file from a URL to my home directory. I've heard that it's better to not use wget because it is used by hackers, however I've also heard that using wget is fine if you are on a server, for example .

There is no easy way to change the default /etc/wgetrc without rebooting, and I don't really want to do that. Does anyone have an easy command I can use? Or would using a browser work? You can use curl. It is the Unix command line version of the browser's download mechanism.
