What is the longest continuous street in Los Angeles?
We may not know, but we know it's certainly a long street.
The story of that stretch, however, is quite different from those of the likes of Bunker Hill or Sunset. It starts in the middle of the wilderness, but ends with a real estate development and lots of paving, not to mention a lot of paving in a very particular spot.
In other words, the story is the story of Alameda Street. The main part, the east-west section running through downtown Los Angeles to the Port of Los Angeles.
Its beginnings lie in the early days of the city and an incident in a bar named the Poodle Dog. In 1908, Alameda Street was a dirt road. On the south side of the avenue stood the Poodle Dog Saloon, one of the many such establishments in the area. At that time, the area where the bar stood was the only patch of Los Angeles that was truly rural, except for the nearby fields of citrus. It was a good place for a man to buy his drinks and let loose with a shotgun at ducks from behind a wooden shed. And it was a better place to get a woman drunk. There were no sidewalks in those days and the dirt road was full of potholes.
By 1916, the bar had burned down, leaving most of its business to a new establishment across the street called the Poodle Dog West. It was owned by James "Bucky" Brown, who owned all of the Poodle Dogs in Los Angeles. (He made a great living doing just that.)
As we might assume, the area now known as the Arts District began taking shape around this time. But it was not much more than that. Just a neighborhood with a couple of houses and a few small businesses.
Then, in 1925, the Pacific Electric opened a new street line from Hollywood to downtown. Like Los Angeles itself, it would follow roads that are mostly just old roads since it was laid out a century ago. It ran along the route of old Spanish and Native American trails.
In order to keep up with traffic and because there were no sidewalks back then, the street was graded and the right of way dedicated as the first city street to be paved. Most of the stretch had dirt and dust piled up on the sides.
