As a Brit living in the Netherlands for a year, this was a concern of mine.

I wanted to understand more about what life is like for an average Dutchman and how he felt about Brexit. After all, one of the main reasons the Dutch voted for Brexit was because the UK didn't even have the basic human rights you'd expect from a European country. The other reason given was that it was time the UK learned to pay its own way. It seemed perfectly reasonable. Yet after a year, it still amazes me that despite a small population (16 million), they can hold their own in a democracy, let alone dominate it.

For many, including myself, Brexit is a chance to reassess our ties with the EU, whether that means more control over our own borders or a better chance to compete with the USA on trade. But for the Dutch at least, it's nothing short of a complete revamp of their relationship with us. Their view is that they've always been great neighbours with Britain, but unfortunately your country has always let you down.

Now after Brexit, you're on your own and there are new countries trying to woo us. We can't stand up to them. And frankly that's the truth.

I met four Dutch men who all felt the same way. When asked about my opinion of Brexit, they all said the exact same thing. They love being British, but we've been let down by our government for decades. You look back at the history and all you see is corruption, corruption. There is a general consensus that after Brexit, they'll be in the right of the negotiating table with the rest of the world. If Britain were to pull out of the European Union, they'd look to the US and China to give them the deals they used to get from us.

It's no wonder the Dutch have become one of the most vocal pro-European voices in the world today. In the past decade, many people think of Britain as a laughing stock. A drunk, racist, anti-immigration country where people think their national football team is better than England's. At the same time, we've left Europe and become a global trade leader and the second biggest economy. There's no doubt that the UK is different to what many of its citizens had previously believed.
