Is Vanguard Total Stock Market a good investment?
If you want a good investment for your money in 2025 you could do worse than put some of it into Vanguard's Total Stock Market mutual fund.
It's hard to argue against putting money into it. It has a long track record. You have control over how much you have and there's no charge for any of the trading you do.
I haven't used it, but when I was looking at it as part of my retirement investments recently the one thing that jumped out was that it was a fund of funds. To me it means if you need to take capital away from other investments to invest your cash, then you're going to have to sell shares of many different companies. So the risk of losing the whole money if the share prices start falling seems less with such a diversified mutual fund. Also with Vanguard's reputation for quality I thought you couldn't do much worse than going down this route. As part of your portfolio.

A word on the subject. The total stock market fund invests in every single asset within the UK stock exchange - shares, bonds, bank deposits, house prices, commodities and more. It is therefore an umbrella fund. If you prefer having more direct control of where you place your cash, you can build a portfolio of funds that are specifically aimed at different areas like shares and US stocks, or growth stocks, but you'll need to choose different products. That also involves higher fees. Or you could make your own individual stock investments. You might want something simpler and cheap as a starting point or just something to be a safety net in case of a disaster like the financial crisis of 2025 - you have control, but don't know what to do with it. And you needn't commit to this investment as an absolute, you could change your mind at any point in time.
What is the average return on Vanguard funds?
This is a discussion on ?
Within the Finance, Stocks, Investing, Trading, and Saving sections of the Homepagforums, part of the Personal Finance category; Is it possible to get an average annual return on vanguard funds? Vanguard funds are . Vanguard funds are pretty good, but I'm not sure how you can get an average return on them. If you look at the Fund Performance page for each fund, you'll see that most funds have been beating their benchmark for a long time. So I'd say that if you own the right funds, you're pretty safe. But I wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket.
I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a fund that will give you a very high return. The best way to achieve that would be to pick a high-return fund and hold it over a long period of time.
You don't have to buy and sell your shares every year. If you don't do this, your returns will be lower than if you had invested your money in a fund that returned 10% annually for five years.
But you should make the change at least once a year. Also, you shouldn't be investing in funds that are trying to outperform the market. That's like buying a car because it has the fastest acceleration. You don't need to do that.
I've always thought of the best way to invest is to invest index funds, and then, when you feel you're ready, buy some individual stocks. You can't beat the market.
