Why would someone use a VPN on their phone?

Does VPN work without Wi-Fi?

No, VPN isn't required to have Internet connection.

That is, it's not "required" for VPNs to have a Wi-Fi connection. You could use an Ethernet cable (if possible) and configure a VPN. VPNs could be configured with mobile phones or other wireless access points. Some older and some cheap routers may not have this function, but there may still be options. In any case, some VPNs will work fine without internet connectivity. The benefit to using a VPN is mainly that your traffic is encrypted during transfer and not sniffed out by hackers on the wire. VPNs often make using online services like Skype/Skype video calls easy.

Should I buy an Apple or PC laptop? It can be difficult to pick a laptop of high quality and decent price that suits what you need. However, if you have some criteria in mind already it becomes easier to decide. We've created a few guidelines which you should always consider, regardless of the vendor. If the laptop is mainly for office work, you should probably be looking at a 14" or 15" MacBook Air. This is due to power-efficiency reasons. A bigger screen can reduce the battery power drain when you aren't watching a DVD / TV show. It's also worth noting that a Mac's CPU has the highest single core performance out of any current laptop CPU and its GPU is about half a second slower than a similarly spec'd Nvidia graphic card on a 13" MacBook Pro when playing Batman Arkham City. That said, we'd advise against any models of Windows laptops as their CPUs are generally inferior. This is due to the high price they charge the manufacturers in order to reduce costs - Apple make most profit per unit sold rather than manufacturers making most profit per unit. Also, keep in mind that Apple laptops tend to be made in China and the production of parts like screens is heavily influenced by supply and demand rather than the needs of consumer demand.

PC hardware has improved significantly in the last decade, but the gap has increased as well.

How do I use a VPN on my phone?

VPNs may use public IP addresses, but they are protected using strong cryptography and the IP is actually a random number.

Therefore there is no way to trace an IP or determine an association.

Once connected you will need to download the VPN app for your phone. They are free and easy to use.

Most smart phones have many built in VPN apps and all of these should work with any VPN service, however I have used only TunnelBear on my Apple devices and NordVPN on my Google devices. How do I configure a VPN? To find the best configuration to achieve maximum speed and encryption, you should try several configurations from the different services. The configuration may be changed by: Change connection type. Connection types are UDP vs TCP, Secure, Proxy, SSL, VPN etc.

Change encryption type to: AES 256, TLS 1.2, OpenVPN, IPSec or IKE.

Change how close the end user should be. To avoid any issues the end user should not be too close. The more often they change the settings the better. However this means many configuration tests.

Try changing the subnets/gateways used by your provider. If you are using a single server and subnet this would be the next logical step.

Select the fastest protocol that works for your end user. NordVPN offer both 256 bit AES and TLS 1.2 encrypted connections, which are two of the fastest connections available.

Once you have tried each connection mode you wish to test you can use my simple configuration tool: TunelBearConfig . In this tool you can configure settings for: Connection type - either Direct, Auto or Client (requires iOS 11). For iOS 7 and below this is the only connection type that can be used. To configure the TunnelBear app on an Android device click here.

Protocol - Use the list or search function to select protocols including: IPSec, DTLS, LZO etc. Ciphers - AES 256 or AES 256-bit TLS 1. Encrypt DNS - Always use off, Never use On. Encrypt Web Traffic - Always use off, Never use On. This will limit your Internet browsing to only those sites selected in the browser.

Why would someone use a VPN on their phone?

The internet is great, but we all know that it has its faults, especially when it comes to privacy.

A VPN can be used to protect your identity and access sensitive sites like your bank, which would otherwise be blocked by your internet service provider. While you're protecting your privacy, you may also get to enjoy other benefits, like having faster and more reliable internet, and even protecting against malware.

With a VPN for Android, you can change your IP address, and access sites in different countries without having to download and install software on your device. You can also use your phone as a hotspot for other devices and computers. In this guide, we will show you how you can configure your Android device to use a VPN to protect your privacy and identity online, and how you can use a VPN on your mobile phone to unblock geo-restricted content and avoid malware.

How to Use a VPN on Android. Step 1: Connect to the VPN. Once you have installed a VPN client on your phone, you can connect it to your VPN server. For most users, it will be easy to just connect your phone to the router using a cable or Wi-Fi.e. If you are not sure how to do that, it is possible that a different device will already be connected to your router, such as an AirPlay receiver or an Apple TV, or another computer.

If you want to connect to a VPN on Android, you need to enable VPN configuration on your Android device, so it knows how to route traffic through the VPN server. Once you've installed the VPN app, open it and go to Settings -> Advanced Settings -> VPN -> Enable.

While you are here, you may want to check that the settings are correctly set up for your device. The two most important settings are the password and the server address. This will be the IP address of your VPN server. You can find it on the website of your VPN provider, or in your network settings.

If you don't know what your server address is, go to your provider's website, click on the settings icon, and you will get your VPN server address there. For the password, we recommend you keep it to a simple phrase. The provider will tell you how to create the password, so don't worry if you forget it.

Can my phone be tracked if I have a VPN?

You may be able to evade a court order by accessing your mobile device through a VPN, but if the VPN provider knows your location and your phone is connected to the same WiFi network as the provider's access point, they may be able to see your IP address and correlate that with the location of your phone.

What is this about? The Electronic Frontier Foundation has published a legal primer called "Privacy in the Real World" explaining these threats and giving you options for protecting your privacy. The document is free.
