Does Surfshark work with Netflix reddit?
My wife and I really enjoy the Netflix streaming service on the TV but only one TV will hold a connection for Netflix.
We get an error pop-up that says "Not Supported". ? No. What it actually means is that their technology requires that the client system has both the internet browser AND a Netflix subscription connected, even when not watching Netflix from that device.
If you just want to use Netflix without a connection, try a VPN service. They are often more secure and you don't have to buy/install a new set top box in order to utilize it.
No what it actually means is that their technology requires that the client system has both the internet browser AND a Netflix subscription connected, even when not watching Netflix from that device. So it's not possible to stream without an internet connection? What I do is have our TV at a work place (connected to our router) and it works so well, that I'd buy that router just to enable that feature. This was working on the PS3 and a couple of PC's earlier, but it no longer seems to be able to do that. The PS3 doesn't need to be connected as much and neither do many PCs, this seems to be something Netflix does when setting up new content etc - and they appear to have changed the way this is achieved.
I'm pretty sure what you want is a 'proxy' (a way to make one connection (or a bunch of them), look like a different connection) instead of a 'split tunnel'.
Why does Netflix not work with Surfshark?
I have just downloaded the Surfshark VPN, tried it, and got a message The selected application is not supported by this computer.
I have tried several times, and still no dice. I'm on a Mac, and this is a free application. Anyone else having trouble with Netflix?
Hi and welcome to MacRumors! I'm one of the moderators here and can try to help answer your question. If you want to PM me though you can. My name is John, but I don't check this site much, so please be patient while I look up your issue.
The problem appears to be that the application is not installed on the Mac, which it should because you're using a free VPN service. That's all I can tell from what you've said.
As you've already tried using a free VPN, it sounds like your problem is the application itself. This is a free service, which means there's no money being made by the creators, which means there's no "technical support". So to be able to use the app, it has to be able to connect to your network for some reason, which means there needs to be an available port in your router. For example, port 80 can be used by any web browser, whereas port 443 is only available for a subset of services such as websites, but usually a VPN service would use 443 to tunnel traffic. (Note: Not all services use SSL for their encryption, so it's not guaranteed you'll get this message every time.)
If you continue to have issues after installing Surfshark, the next thing you can do is contact their support team. They can help you figure out which port is in use by the service and connect to that port, but this might be more trouble than it's worth if it's an ongoing problem.
On the bright side, their service works great on my Macs, iPhones, and iPads, so I'd definitely recommend them to anyone else experiencing the same issue. If I connect to a free VPN, will that not affect my use of Netflix? I did a bit of research and found out that I have to connect to a port to access Netflix. If I connect to a free VPN service, won't that prevent me from connecting to that port? Is there any other way I can connect to the port without connecting to a VPN service?
Why is Netflix rejecting my VPN?
By Matt Brown, on August 30th, 2024.
I've been using a VPN for a few years now. I like its speed and convenience, but when the Netflix iOS app started rejecting my proxy at the end of last year it was very frustrating. At first, I was told that my VPN wasn't fast enough. In fact, I had heard they wanted all connections to be under 500 Kbps (I assume because that would mean they didn't have to pay as much for bandwidth) but this was untrue. My VPN was already well under 500 Kbps and I had just upgraded the service. After a while they dropped the line about speed and simply said that my proxy didn't work. That wasn't entirely true either, and here's why.
What's the problem? To use the Netflix streaming app you need to open a URL like this: And then open up Safari or your favorite browser and click that button. If you are on a network with limited bandwidth and you're not using a proxy server you won't get to the content, and the Netflix app will tell you that it can't connect.
It turns out that Netflix does not like the proxy servers you run. They want you to use their own proxy server directly, and not one you run.
The problem is that they are running a server on your local computer. This isn't really a problem because if they were to connect to an OpenVPN server on your router you would already be using a VPN. The real problem comes from trying to get them to run a Netflix server on your own computer.
How to get around this problem. The first thing you have to do is setup a custom profile in your OpenVPN client so that the network connection appears to go to a proxy server somewhere on the Internet. This won't fool the Netflix app, but it'll help some other apps.
To set this up we'll use OpenVPN's user-server mode which uses a configuration file stored on the OpenVPN server.
Does Netflix work with Surfshark?
I have just been setting up Netflix Streaming with my MacBook Air.
When I go to sign in through the NetFlix site they direct me to using Surfshark because my isp is Vodafone not BT. Can I use Surfshark or not? How will it work and when can I cancel if something goes wrong? Thank You
There's no doubt that Netflix streams perfectly fine via VPN. If you were getting network errors on your PC Netflix then chances are you weren't using a solid one. Some users here have suggested a VPN because Netflix has been known to slow down other traffic on your connection such as torrents.
Now to your question. Since Netflix requires authentication each time you use it, you must remember your username/password since only your Mac will know it. Surfshark has been recommended as an easy to setup way to keep these credentials safe and out of reach of prying eyes. They also say they don't store any credit card info so as long as the account information isn't compromised, you'll be completely safe.
As for canceling, like you say, Surfshark should give you ample time to back out. Even with just a 5Mbps download speed, your movie probably shouldn't be more than 50 minutes or less.
Thanks again. Just found out that I now have 4GB of data usage for each month on the Netflix account since I started using Surfshark. I think this includes their free trialsis that why? That seems a bit high. Can I just get Surfshark and have Netflix free from this instead?
Your Netflix plan might be counting against the data cap even without Surfshark. But with Surfshark they get counted twice. Surfshark is not free, it comes with an account. You also have to have the Surfshark app for each of your devices you would want to connect. So the free option of Surfshark isn't very good in itself.
It also depends how you use your bandwidth. Surfshark might eat up your data cap faster but since you said it's not much of a sacrifice for a lot of people, I guess the extra usage won't seem very high and you can stay with your current plan.
