By Kishori Marakkanatt/Mint. Bijapur, in Karnataka, is a nondescript town that's home to India's first royal dynasty, the Adil Shahis of the Bijapur Sultanate. They ruled from 1480 to 1686, during a golden age where the dynasty reached the pinnacle of its power in the region.
During those long years, in which the sultanates were locked in a series of wars and alliances with each other, the kingdom flourished, its culture spread widely in the region. And in Bijapur, it is possible to discover another place, one whose name has slipped into the Indian subconscious: the 'golden city'. Bijapur boasts the country's best-preserved group of Muslim buildings, including splendid mosques, magnificent tombs and magnificent public spaces. It may also be the oldest and largest mosque-mamluk complex (a combination of a mosque and mamluk). It was founded by Malik al-Zamri, a prominent Arab general and chief advisor to the sultanate. By that time, most of the towns of that golden age were already established or under construction. The city was built almost exclusively on royal orders. In order to ensure that Bijapur grew as quickly as possible, the Sultan, who spent all his money on building a capital, ordered the construction of buildings that should reflect how important he was. The most important buildings became part of the royal centre, the Darul Zamra, also known as the Golden City. These buildings were a mosque called the Masjiduddin Khan Minaret, Madinat al-Muwahiddin, a minaret with a huge dome supported by marble elephants; a pavilion for a garden, called Burja e Istiqlal or the Flagpole of Independence, and the tomb of Malik al-Zamri, the city founder. To protect these landmarks, a wall, known as the 'fortified city', was built around them, so that no one could damage them. The buildings of that era, with their exquisite marblework and intricately carved wood, still stand as architectural masterpieces.
Who does Michelle Ang voice?
Her character, Michelle in Lost?
"For me, what makes me feel most real is how people react to me, and the part of the world that they respond to and love. I feel like when people react, it's so real. They react in a way that connects me to another life experience."
"I think we're becoming more interested in ourselves and our relationships. The characters are always going to be with us. People are going to be attracted to them and connect with them."
What are her thoughts on the character Michelle?Michelle Ang's career has been in TV since 1992. She was the voice of Michelle in Lost (2005-2010) and the voice of the young girl named Tia Mowry in That's So Raven (2003-2007).
Michelle plays the role of a female in the male-dominated showbiz world. She takes care of her family as well as her son, while she's on the road. There are times when she gets lost in the male world of men - they are the ones who decide if her life will continue or if she will be terminated. For that reason, Michelle is also at a disadvantage being a female.
With so many male leads, did Michelle take a lesson from this series on how to carry herself?I have grown up in a patriarchal world. It's hard for me to relate to it and speak the language of these characters. But I've learned the language and am able to read it. What are my problems? As a woman, you are not seen as one. There are no words to describe your gender or where you come from. But you can be the same person as the person playing the male lead - a woman.
You play someone who's at the top of her game. With all those actors who take on roles like that, do you think that there was something about this show that you were more suited for than others?I love that job. I've played a character who is a businesswoman, a mother, and a lawyer. And as a person, I'm all these things. So there were no boundaries.
