What are some examples of feedback for students?
How can you provide it?
Answer: It's probably the most important feedback you give students. It's what they use to adjust their behavior and their actions.
And it has to be specific. I'm not going to tell you that your writing is too long, or your story too short. I'm going to tell you how you can improve your work. And I'm going to tell you what you need to do.
I have a student who has a creative writing group. And every week, she shows me a short story that she's written. It's not bad. It's not great. But I can tell that there are a few things that she could do better. And that's what I tell her.
If you're a teacher of English or language arts, then I think you know what I'm talking about. How do you make it useful? How do you make it specific? Here's one example of feedback. You'll see what I mean when you read it.
Write this sentence so that it flows smoothly. Don't use too many adjectives. Don't use too many adverbs. You get the idea. The problem is that I'm just telling her what I don't like. That's not useful feedback. It doesn't tell her what she should do.
You have to be specific. It's the same thing as giving a student a math problem. Do this problem twice as fast. Do this problem in three minutes. Do this problem without looking at the answer. I know that some people get the idea. They can tell you what to do, and they can even give you an example of how to do it.
But when I try to explain this to you, it's a lot easier for you to understand if you hear it in my words. The way I tell you what I don't like is, Tell me what you should do.
