Plastic does scratch wood, but not in the way that you think. It's because of the abrasive qualities of plastic. Scratching can occur with a plastic blade; however, there are very few paints and finishes that will scratch. You don't need to worry about a plastic blade.

Bill B., Here is a typical recipe for exterior furniture finishes: Oil/varnish. This is what most of us know as shellac or varnish. It comes in liquid form, and you mix it with a solvent (like turpentine or mineral spirits) and apply it with a brush. It dries very quickly, usually within a few minutes.

Wax/varnish. Shellac can be combined with a soft wax, like beeswax, to make a more durable finish. In a standard mix, shellac and beeswax make up about one-third of the mix. This mix is generally applied with a brush. The wax coats the shellac, and the beeswax penetrates the shellac to strengthen it. The result is a very durable, non-toxic finish that requires no waxing after application.

A quick test. Put a drop of shellac onto your fingernail. If you can rub the shellac off, then you're ready to apply a finish to furniture. There are a lot of types of shellac. Most have different ratios of wax to shellac, so you may have to experiment with different brands to find the one that works for you.

Do plastic razor blades work?

I use this kind of plastic razor, I always shave with it.

I like the thinness of it so that I have no nicks. My only problem is that the head never stays in place on my face as I shave. It usually falls off, and I keep having to bend down to retrieve it. Am I doing something wrong? Is this product intended to be used with a normal blade? I would like it to stay in place! Is there a better product than this?

What type of razor is it? That type of blade that has two prongs on the end instead of a plastic cap, and a plastic sleeve on the handle? If so, you should be able to put it in a standard double edged razor. You also might be able to purchase a different plastic sleeve that fits on the handle. That might eliminate the problem.

No razor blades work, just plastic? I have had your plastic razor work on the right side of my face but not on the left. It is very annoying because I shave both sides.29 each. What can I do?

The plastic sleeve doesn't seem to fit on the handle of the razor. I just try to insert it, but the razor moves up or down as I hold it. Why does it move? The whole thing works ok with ordinary disposable double edge razors.

Could it be, is it still attached to the plastic handle one of the handles when you are holding it, and when you release the handle to shave your face, the metal clips pull out of the plastic handle. This would explain the movement.

To eliminate the possibility of any metal parts in the plastic handle, if the plastic handle fits over the metal part of the handle (not too tight), it could possibly do what you are describing. But if you get the product, it would best if you return it, since it is defective.

How to open an anvil mini scraper?

How to open anvil mini scraper? I got this anvil (Anvil 5) that I opened. Now I've got a small scraped out piece and would like to know how to get rid of the red paint. It says to do no damage to the bottom. How? My hands are bleeding. Help me out. -Matt, Dallas, TX
1) Use a tooth brush or a very fine sand paper to clean off the paint. 2) A really coarse sandpaper or a file is not to be used for this - just scrape away the rust layer. 3) if you still have a piece that needs to be removed, use a thin coat of epoxy glue, apply it and when dry, use a very sharp knife to gently pry the rust piece away. 4) after scraping the rust layer, apply another thin coat of epoxy glue - wait about 15 mins before applying again. Repeat until all traces of red have been cleaned away You will need to experiment to get the right amount of epoxy glue, but the goal is to have a super strong bond between the rust and the anvil with epoxy glue. I'd buy a fine metal file and make a series of really thin incisions along the rust, then pull the rust away gently - don't use too much force, just enough to move the rusty piece from the rust covered part. If you want to remove the rust, you'll have to get creative! 1) Put the anvil in some warm water in a sink or a bowl or something. Try to soak it until all the surface rust is soaked.

2) Dry the anvil on your kitchen towel or whatever. Make sure it is only dry, not hot or humid 3) Take it to a workbench/table etc and hold it under a hood so you can work on it under protection. You might need some duct tape to keep it in place.

4) Do lots of filing and scraping and cutting into the rust to try and get as much of it removed as possible. 5) Coat all the working area with lots of epoxy glue or whatever you want to use to protect the anvil from being scrapped or damaged.
