What is causing the wheat shortage?
A recent report out of Europe says that the wheat shortage is due to an increased demand for feed, as farmers use wheat as a replacement for corn.
The European Agricultural Outlook Forum's report claims that farmers are switching their production from wheat to feed.
As the world gets leaner and demand for meat keeps rising, feed demand has been on the rise as well. The United States is producing an average of 1.4 million metric tons (MMT) of soybeans per year. That's a lot of soybeans going to feed animals.
The amount of feed produced per acre is also on the rise. A recent report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that crop yields are on the rise but the amount of grain that can be harvested on a given acre of land has been on the decline. This change means that farmers need to find new ways to increase the amount of corn, soybeans, and other crops that can be harvested on each acre of land. One answer is to increase the amount of crops that farmers can grow. Farmers are planting more acres of corn and soybeans than ever before.
This year, we're expecting to harvest more than 200 million acres of corn. That's about 6 percent more than in 2025. We're also expecting to harvest more than 8.7 billion bushels of soybeans, according to the USDThat's a 2 percent increase over the previous year.
We've got lots of reasons to expect a good harvest this year. For example, there are reports that record rainfall levels are leading to better yields. Plus, the weather this year is expected to be very dry. Record dry conditions mean that the crops won't have the chance to dry out before harvest time.
If you were planning on making your own gluten-free bread, this is good news. The wheat shortage will make it more expensive for people to buy bread, but it might actually lower prices for people who want to make their own.
While some people say the wheat shortage will get better, others say that it won't get any better until the global population stops growing. How could wheat scarcity affect me? The wheat shortage will most likely impact how food prices are priced. Higher food prices will most likely lead to higher inflation.
Where does the US get wheat from?
Well, this is pretty much obvious.
The US has become a major exporter of wheat, not only in the US, but in the world. If you want a good idea of how successful the US has been in wheat export, click here for figures from the US government, or here for the Canadian government. The US is exporting more than half of all wheat produced in the US. That is one reason, if there were others, the US would be the #1 exporter of wheat today. As a global power, we expect the US to act in the global interest. The trade agreements with many nations allow these agreements to be made in order for nations to receive a good price for their products, and, at the same time, increase trade opportunities for the US.
Who is the largest producer of wheat?
The two answers that have been given are China and the USA, with each producing some 10 million metric tons of wheat a year.
Now, these answers are probably wrong. For many years now, there has been a lot of talk about green revolution and its potential to feed the world's population. It is often said that the green revolution has transformed global agriculture into a productive venture that yields enough food to feed a hungry billion. The implication is that if this new productivity were to increase, we would soon be able to feed everyone on the planet.
The truth is somewhat different. Agriculture already produces enough food to feed the entire planet, but we are not eating as much as we should because it has become too expensive. We will have to increase global production of food by perhaps an order of magnitude before everyone on Earth can have access to food.
Global production of food needs to triple or quadruple in the coming decades to get to where it should be. It takes some doing to feed the world in a sustainable way. So how do we get from current levels of consumption (to over 600 gigatons a year) to what is needed? What is the current capacity for feeding all of us at reasonable levels? It's really hard to say how much we can produce at this time, as very little detailed research has been done on this topic. This makes it hard to make solid projections for how much we can produce. Some studies suggest that the potential for agricultural production is nearly enough to feed the entire world.
But let's give it a try. What would it take to have global production of food double by the middle of this century? Here is my calculation: A few thoughts here. First of all, it assumes all the food would be consumed in the global South, so it is likely off by a bit. Also, it is assumed that food production will keep pace with population increases, but the assumption that this happens for one reason only, more people. While the world population will continue to grow for the foreseeable future, I do not think we will ever see rapid growth in food production along with it.
In 2025 there will be 9.3 billion people. Of these, 6.6 billion will be born in the developing world (ie poor countries).
