Is there a free VPN for students?
Yes, for most public schools you can get a free one that allows you to bypass censorship.
Many schools offer this too. This one is free and has a good rating but I know it will not work in many countries.
Does VPN have an impact on internet connection? If so, can a VPN be used to prevent that impact? I know some VPN use VPN to route data through VPN in order to protect against traffic analysis. Is that a good idea? Are there other methods to do this? If your institution gives access to the internet by means of your school computer, most likely it uses a proxy. A proxy acts as a router, passing traffic from one machine to another, so that a single internet connection ends up being made up of several connections to different hosts. By choosing a VPN service that supports NAT hole punching it can essentially perform that task for you, providing a tunnel between your device and the server running the content that you need access to. There are 3 main types of proxy:
HTTP proxy. HTTPS proxy. SSH/SFTP proxy. In the case of the HTTP and HTTPS proxies there's not much difference, as these generally provide access to the whole Internet. SSH is a different story, as it's only a connection to your institution's own network. An SSH proxy is only meant for securing a SSH connection to the institutional network and cannot be used to access anything else.
A quick Google search will turn up many articles covering the benefits of using a VPN for school or company, not to mention many VPN providers who offer educational discounts. Unfortunately the majority of these articles are written about the need for a paid VPN, however there are lots of free ones out there to choose from, such as the following: Free-VPN.com has a good selection of free VPNs, with some VPNs offering multiple configurations, and some which support up to ten devices simultaneously. They also provide an explanation of how and why the service works so you'll know what to expect if you try one out. You may want to check out the reviews on their site first though as some of them aren't completely trustworthy.
Is there a 100% free VPN?
If you really need to use a free VPN, and all your data gets captured, you are toast.
I'd suggest something like TOR or Vole. I personally use both of those, and they both work great. Vole has even more free options for Android users!
But if you don't know anything about crypto, I'd suggest buying some and understanding how it works. Then maybe a nice hardware wallet. But I would do this under the radar. It's one thing getting caught by law enforcement, another to get it reported to your boss.
I'd get some sort of hardware wallet, and maybe a USB drive with some encryption software. Just in case.

Yes. The idea is that all of your crypto would be stolen. The thief then sends everything to a different service to wash it, and sells it on the black market.
For instance, if you were to buy Ethereum from an exchange, and the exchange got hacked, and the hacker put a hack notice that you are infected with malware, your funds are lost because then you're using the hacked system's API. So either you pay again, or your money is gone.
Are VPNs illegal in schools?
VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and their ilk are increasingly popular. The BBC and New York Times have recently reported on how schools are allowing students to browse the Internet anonymously and how they can protect themselves from hackers. But with all the recent coverage of VPNs, I thought I'd give a brief overview of what they are, where they come from, and their security risks, not forgetting, of course, their usefulness in schools. And, of course, I'll be talking about legal issues.
What is a VPN? A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a software program that lets you send your connection over a public network using another network. You can see the VPN client as simply a tunnel once it is set up between two computers. That connection is secure and will protect you against unauthorized people eavesdropping. A VPN is like your own private network.
Your normal ISP network or wireless network may be shared with others. A VPN allows you to use that shared network without being noticed. A VPN works with any ISP router, which makes it a useful tool for schools.
And it does cost money! Although, in many cases, students can get their schools to provide them free VPNs, and this, then, makes it more affordable. VPNs are also useful because you can get around the limitations of a shared network. You might, for example, want to be able to access an internal network, but you don't want to be visible. You can be on the outside, connected to the public network, and yet still have access to the private network. A VPN lets you do this.
How to find the best VPN for your needs. There are many VPNs available. Some are free; some are cheap; some are expensive. It's up to you to choose.
If you only want to go online and access your school network from home, you might choose a VPN that is easy to set up on a home computer. Or you might use the cheapest option, with a one-click setup.
If you want to use your laptop while you're on a school campus, or if you want to access your university's internal networks, you might want to choose a more expensive option that includes features such as logging and traffic analysis.
