How do I block a host on my computer?

How do I block access to hosts file?

Here's the scenario: I don't want people to use Google search.

I'm sure a lot of you know the trick. If you search from a computer using a different DNS server, you will be routed to google. When using our DNS server, google.com doesn't exist anymore and that's why we chose a more suitable domain.

Unfortunately, there are still a bunch of Windows XP/Vista/7 users out there who don't know what a hosts file is or how to block access to it. That's why there's this question on askubuntu.

If I use Windows Live Mail/Skype/whatever else and I search from my computer, they take me directly to google. So that trick doesn't work here.

It's my understanding that this is not possible. I've seen several posts about blocking access to hosts file but none seem to work. I keep getting these errors:

I've tried editing the hosts file as root and as an admin user without luck. If I add a 127.0.1 localhost entry, the error changes to "Windows cannot find the specified file" or something. The error is consistent when I open CMD as an admin.

When you're done editing the hosts file, you will also have to flush the DNS cache using something like netsh and if you don't do that, your new host configuration won't take effect. What about running a VPN? If the VPN is up, it won't access the real internet and all your computer will access is the VPN network. And then you could do the DNS switch trick I mentioned in my example.

If you're worried about giving out more information, make sure your firewall is up to date and you only allow connections from your VPN. You can always turn it off whenever you want to play on your old DNS.

If you're talking about using hosts-file-access-prevention software (HAP), you might be using it wrong. That software works by adding entries to the hosts file to prevent access to whatever host you want to block. This works until the HAP software expires. You don't just add an entry to the hosts file, you add many entries that would prevent anyone from accessing all hosts on the Internet except for the ones you wanted them to access.

How to block hosts in Windows 10 firewall?

For example, for the purpose of protecting your computer from being infected by malware, you can set your Windows 10 firewall to block requests from specific IP addresses.

Here are the instructions to set up Windows 10 firewall to block requests from specific IP addresses: Step 1. Click Start, type "Windows Defender," and press Enter. Step 2. Click Windows Defender Settings, and then click the Advanced tab. Step 3. Click Block Hosts in the dialog box, and then click Next. Step 4. Enter the address of the host that you want to block in the Host field, and then select either "Blocking incoming connections from this host" or "Blocking incoming connections from all hosts on this network." (If you want to block connections from only specific ports, you can enter the corresponding port number into the Port field. The default setting is 80. You can also use the following IP address to block requests from a particular address, such as "192.168.5", "192.6", "192.7" or "192.8".) Click the Advanced button.

Step 5. Enter a description for the blocked host, and then click OK. Notes. Windows 10 allows you to block web traffic from specific IP addresses or hostnames. However, if you block the web traffic from a malicious website, you might not be able to access the website that you want to protect from being infected. For example, if you use Windows 10 to block requests from the address "maliciouswebsite.com" from being accessed through a browser, you will be unable to access the website www.com, but you will be able to access the website www.com/homepage.html.

To make sure that you can access the blocked websites that you want to access, use the IP address that Windows 10 assigns to your computer to access the websites that you want to protect. For example, if you access a website on the Internet using an IP address that Windows 10 assigns to your computer, Windows 10 will automatically make a request to the website on behalf of your computer. When Windows 10 blocks requests from a particular IP address, you cannot access any websites from the IP address that Windows 10 assigned to your computer.
