Has NordVPN ever been subpoenaed?

Yes, in June of 2025, after it was sued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for allegedly deceiving customers and not disclosing its data-collection practices. The FTC's complaint claimed that NordVPN failed to properly disclose how it collected, used, or disclosed customer data, as required by the FTC's 2025 FTC Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.

That's why NordVPN went to court to fight the FTC's complaint. Last December, a federal judge granted a partial summary judgment in NordVPN's favor, rejecting the FTC's claim that NordVPN deceived its customers and improperly disclosed their information.

The court's ruling means that NordVPN won the case on two of the three claims against it. However, it doesn't mean the FTC has given up on its case against NordVPN.

The next step in the case is a trial, which will determine whether NordVPN violated FTC law by deceiving customers about its data-collection practices. We asked NordVPN's VP of Legal Affairs about the FTC's legal action against the company. Here's what he had to say.

NordVPN Responds to FTC Subpoenas. How many times have you been subpoenaed by the Federal Trade Commission? NordVPN: We have received two subpoenas from the Federal Trade Commission in March and June of 2025, related to our compliance with the 2025 FTC Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. The FTC has also demanded that we turn over information about our users' IP addresses, which we believe violates the privacy of our users and the Fourth Amendment of the U. Constitution.

Were you aware of the FTC's investigation into NordVPN before it subpoenaed your company? NordVPN: We were aware of the FTC's investigation prior to the subpoena, but were surprised by the subpoenas, as we had no reason to believe that the FTC was interested in our activities. We immediately filed a motion to quash both subpoenas, which was granted.

Why did the FTC decide to issue subpoenas to NordVPN?

Has NordVPN been hacked?

For a few hours, it seemed like NordVPN had been compromised by hackers.

Users began to report they were being redirected to unwanted websites, while the VPN service said on Twitter that some customers had experienced slow speeds. NordVPN's founder said on Twitter that the company had not been hacked and the only thing affected was the main website. A couple of hours ago, NordVPN was hacked. We are currently working on a fix for our customers. NordVPN (@nordvpn) June 4, 2018

The VPN service said its main website had been affected and affected customers were being redirected to a 'redirect' page when they tried to access the service. There was no indication that hackers had accessed any customer data or used the site to spread malware. But some users, including myself, found that our web browser would not open the NordVPN website anymore. We were taken to an error page that said: Sorry, the connection to the server could not be established. I reached out to NordVPN for comment and was told they are aware of the issue. We've fixed the issue and are working on getting our site back up and running. We're sorry for the inconvenience, the company said.

In the meantime, NordVPN said they were working on a fix to their site and promised that none of your information has been affected. NordVPN says there was no hack but that the only thing that happened is that their website was temporarily shut down. It said there was no reason to be worried about customer data.

It also said that only a small number of customers were affected by the outage and that those affected were being contacted. While I could not access NordVPN's website, I could access other popular VPN services like Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN and VyprVPN. NordVPN is a popular VPN service that is often recommended by journalists because it offers an unlimited number of connections and has strong privacy features. I started testing NordVPN's service using Firefox, and within 30 seconds I was redirected to a page where a message appeared saying that NordVPN was offering a special deal.
