My rice cooker does the job, it cooks the rice and I don't need to do anything else.
I hear this all the time. The problem is that most of us don't know how to tell the difference between a proper cooked rice and one that is mushy.
This means that in the end you are left with mushy rice which is why people don't bother cooking rice in a rice cooker, they make sure it is done before serving. The easiest way to tell the difference is to eat some rice and if it is not properly cooked it will be hard and unappetizing. As a side note: If you want to eat rice as is (steaming) it should be cooked properly. Just boil it in water and drain it immediately after boiling and then let it cool off. You can add spices and other stuff like garlic, ginger and chopped onions etc. Before steaming.
How to cook rice? It depends on your rice cooker. In most cases it works fine. But it is possible to get mushy rice by following some of the tips below.
When it says "Rice is done when". I do not recommend you use the setting with words. I believe it will not work that well in a rice cooker.
Instead I use the setting with color. Rice is done when the bottom becomes black. If your rice cooker is new, it will probably not work well with dark brown rice. For this reason, I use light brown rice. Use less water. It is easier to overdo the amount of water. It is better to use more rice, but use less water. After it is cooked, it needs some more time to cool off. When it is still too hot, you will not have a rice that will taste good. You should wait for the rice to cool off until it is not too hot touch. If it is too dry, add a bit more water. If you are getting a little dry rice, you can always add a bit more water to the rice cooker. But this is not a solution to the problem. If it is too wet, do not add water. When it is too wet, the rice will stick together.
