Is 172.31 255.255 a valid IP address?

There are times where the network I'm on has a problem, resulting in my router changing IP address.

This was the case over the weekend. I changed my IP to 172.31 (and the router) in an attempt to be able to surf on the internet. But is this valid? Is it correct?

It's an IP address space, and it's not uncommon. Your LAN has multiple subnets, 172.31/32. It might be used for VPN as well, or some other purpose, and most common ones are:
WAN-facing traffic. Backup. DHCP Proxy. Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Firewall. MPC (Multiprotocol Label Switching). DNS server. Gateway. Depending on your particular network, they might all have their own addresses in the same network.

BajK, what is your game? OerHeks: it's from valve, a valve game. when I start it up, I get "An unknown error occured." (something like that) and the timer runs out and the window closes.
steam wont start it anymore and I dont have any other options. BajK, how are you launching the game? via command line or launcher or what? launcher. BajK: Did you check the logs for error's perhaps.
