Does ExpressVPN still work in China in 2024?
I'm traveling in China this summer, and I use a VPN service.
Would I still be able to use it? Would I have to choose between it and using my own computer in a local hotel room or my company's VPN server? The problem for me is that it will probably only work for a few hours in a day, while I'm out for a week, and a Chinese government blocks some of the websites anyway.
The China-based VPN service that I use doesn't work inside China on its own, so my solution was to buy a VPN for travel from the US. The problem with that though, is that I want to be able to use it when I am working too, not only when I am travelling, so it is kind of a double-edged sword to get one for travel if you are going to be travelling to China.
Anyways, I hope someone knows something about this! I have been asking friends of mine about it, but haven't gotten a good answer yet. I can only speak for myself, but I doubt I'll be there. There are no legal ways to access any content you want online when you are traveling, unless you are going to a country that allows you to do so. When I travel to Japan, I will be able to access stuff normally, but when I travel to other countries that don't allow sites like Facebook to be accessed, then it becomes important to have a VPN.
A VPN isn't going to work when you are traveling to a country that does have legal access to what you want to access. For example, when I was in Italy last year, there was a Facebook blackout. You could open a VPN, but your connection would be completely unusable because all the servers of Facebook are in the US. It wouldn't work at all.
So yeah, it's a hassle. I do think there is a market for a VPN service that has servers in a lot of different countries. Thanks for your response Andrew. So what I thought I heard from you in your earlier post was that ExpressVPN can only be used for a few hours during a day inside China. Also there is no chance to get around this even if you set a schedule. I thought this wasn't the case. Is that correct?
Which VPN app works in China?
China requires access to social media apps with the ability to upload or receive images or video.
That's a massive chunk of the VPN use market, and it's what prompted us to build our own, from the ground up. It's free for any VPN, but we offer premium VPNs for those wanting additional tools, custom-built VPNs for those who do a lot of file uploads and image-heavy work, and ultra-high performance, ultra-secure VPN for those who spend most of their time working in corporate environments and who'd rather not expose their private web browsing to people outside of that office.
While most VPN providers don't have much trouble with these types of apps, we've been using OpenVPN specifically, and its use of the UDP port 1900, which is blocked by all of China's big internet providers. This made sense since OpenVPN would be used by Chinese VPN users. However, even with the OpenVPN issue solved, using our own app turned out to be more of a challenge than expected.
We decided to turn back to OpenVPN, but this time we built our own app using Ionic and Firebase. If you're not familiar, Ionic is the tool for building hybrid mobile apps using HTML/CSS/Javascript. Firebase is a web database solution for app development. As luck would have it, both of these tools make it super simple to quickly build, deploy, and maintain a VPN app without having to reinvent the wheel. In other words, if you want to build an app fast and easily, using this combination of technologies is going to be your best bet.
One advantage of using these apps to build your VPN is that once they are complete, it's very easy to export your data, push your builds to the app stores and share links to them with other people you want to install the VPN for. This means that your private and highly secure IP address is no longer shared or saved in any way. You just need to install the VPN app and launch it to change locations, where your server's IP address is then replaced with your private one.
Can ExpressVPN work in China?
I am planning to move my VPN from HideMyAss to ExpressVPN.
The reason is that I have a problem with HideMyAss (which happens all the time) and I really don't want to get another problem.
I am wondering if ExpressVPN works in China. If you know, please tell me. Thank you! I just got back from visiting China for about 4 days and ExpressVPN did work just fine. They have servers all over the place in China and they worked great.
I'm not sure where ExpressVPN servers are located in China, but I'll check on their website. But I'm pretty sure they're not located in China, because I was using their servers in Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia and I couldn't find any Chinese servers.
But anyway, I'll have to wait until I get home to check on their website. Edit: ExpressVPN's Chinese server page states that there is no Chinese server. So I guess they don't have any servers in China.
When I was in China I was using their servers in HK. If you go to their China page they show their server locations as "Unknown". This may be a very stupid question, but can anyone confirm whether ExpressVPN servers work in China? I am considering switching from HideMyAss, but am hesitant about putting my VPN in China. Thanks. Mike. Yes, they do work in China.
Why is ExpressVPN not working in China?
I have been using ExpressVPN for a few years now and I find it to be very good in countries such as the US, UK and Europe.
However, I am really struggling with it in China and India. Is there a way around this problem?
Is there a specific VPN that doesn't work in China? The ExpressVPN app works on both Android and iOS devices and it should be able to connect to any VPN server in the world. A VPN can be set up for free through an app like TunnelBear. You can see my ExpressVPN review here.
Why do I need to use a VPN in China? The internet is censored in China and to get online in China, you need to use a VPN. If you don't have one then you will be unable to access web sites or apps that require a connection to the outside world.
Do I need to use a VPN in India? Many services and apps that were designed to be used in the US and other western countries will not work in India due to the high level of censorship. That is why I recommend ExpressVPN. There is no reason not to use it in India. It has worked for me for the last few years.
Does ExpressVPN only work in the US? You can use ExpressVPN from anywhere in the world. What is the difference between using ExpressVPN and Tor? With ExpressVPN you gain an extra layer of security by using a VPN to tunnel through an encrypted connection. When using a VPN, your web browser connects directly to a server in a different country, thus hiding your IP address. However, when using Tor, your IP address is hidden but you will never know which country it comes from.
What countries are not affected by censorship? China, Cuba, Syria, North Korea and Iran. Other countries that censor web sites and social media apps are Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.
Why is ExpressVPN not working in India? Many websites and apps need to connect to the outside world to make sure they are updated with information that is required for the service to function. The internet is censored in India and when you try to access these websites you will receive an error message. ExpressVPN cannot fix this problem and it can not connect to these sites.
