Can Netgear router work without a modem?

Can I use my NETGEAR modem router as a router only?

My current router doesn't have a wifi hotspot.

Just curious if my NETGEAR would allow me to use it just for the WiFi without having to use a separate router aswell.

For me I use just a wireless modem. Not a wireless modem router.

Netgear N200 wifi router? so I just wanted to set up my first home network, the steps are easy except that I am having trouble configuring my internet connection. I have just the one netgear n200 wifi router that has 2 network ports and an usb port. This is all I need (I understand) But when I set my wifi device or laptop on the N200, it doesnt show any networks. So do I need another router, is this just a dead end? or maybe a firewall somewhere?

The IP address for my router is 192.168.100
My modem is an acer d- link 3131vpn 1gb. The netgear n200 is connected to an apple tv by a ethernet cable. I have done all of these steps but nothing comes up in the network connections on my mac. I think you are right. I only want the wireless. If I can setup a static ip then it would be the easiest.

Check your DNS settings. If you want to connect to the internet via wired connection then connect using Ethernet cables. Connect each end of the wires to port 1 and 2 of the router. Then power the router on with the power cable. When the WAN light on your modem turns off then you will have Internet.

When you connect a modem then the modem will give the WAN IP and DNS. The router should then have the LAN IP and the gateway/subnet mask. You may need to run Internet connection sharing (ICS) if this is not working with your Netgear router.

Netgear AC1900 wifi router setup? I am trying to set up a Wifi.e. For this I use Netgear N2000 wifi router which has internet access and 2 Wifi points.2

How do I use my NETGEAR c6300 as a router only?

When you have the NETGEAR C6300 as your router and you also have an ADSL Modem, when you log in to the router (as it is being your primary router) you will need to enter the password of the ADSL Modem and not the NETGEAR C6300's password. After entering the password of the ADSL Modem you will see a link "Setup" which will take you to your ADSL Modem's settings. The default username and password will be ADSLUSERPASSWORD and ADSLPASSWORD respectively.

If you are using the Netgear Router as your primary router (and you have a second router for internet access) then you need to know that you have to use the login credentials of the secondary router when connecting to your C6300 router, if you are having difficulty with this then please contact us and we will be happy to help. The c6300 was purchased in October 2024, and as far as I am aware, it is a new model. You can use the C3000, but if you want support with other devices on the network and use other applications you will need to use the c6300.

I would suggest changing the WAN IP on the C6300 router from 192.168.1 to either 192.100 or 192.101 and also make sure the C6300 router has Internet access and set up the default gateway on the router to 192.100

If you are using the Netgear Router as your primary router (and you have a second router for internet access) then you need to know that you have to use the login credentials of the secondary router when connecting to your C6300 router, if you are having difficulty with this then please contact us and we will be happy to help. It doesn't matter what credentials you put in, it just matters whether the router is setup to forward all internet traffic to the modem.

Can NETGEAR C6220 be used as a router?

I own an ASUS TP-Link TL-R61VU and a NETGEAR C6220.

Both have been working fine in the network, however, lately I notice that only my ASUS router is not able to ping other computers (eg, Google Chrome browser or a Mac Book). Could it be possible that my NETGEAR router has some issues? Any suggestion or remedy would be greatly appreciated!

It depends what version of software you are using on the C6220. I believe there are at least two versions of Netgear firmware. You need to make sure that you have the latest firmware for it to function correctly.

The TL-R61VU works with TP-Link software so that might be a more likely reason why it's failing to connect.

Can Netgear router work without a modem?

My friend has a Netgear Router which she was asked to share the Internet over it to other devices in the house.

Unfortunately it seems that is cannot do so with out a modem and we have several devices which may or may not be connecting.

Now I don't want to argue over who is right and who is wrong I just want to confirm that the device can function independently or not. If you want to connect devices without using a modem you have two options, one is if your wireless router allows you to connect directly to the internet through an ethernet cable, in this case the Netgear device will work perfectly fine, just plug the ethernet cord into the back of the router and you should be able to connect to the router. The other option is to use a router without ethernet port as mentioned above, you'll need a phone line and a modem, a phone line because you'll need to connect the phone line to the back of your modem and a modem because you'll need to plug the ethernet cord into the router and connect the router to the modem.

I think there's a third option, the router you have with the ethernet port only connects wireless devices through ethernet cord, but the router comes with a built in modem so you can plug an ethernet cord into the ethernet port. In this case the router will function correctly when connected to the modem but there's no way to connect a phone line into it.

Yes the router alone will work but not the same as having a direct connection to the modem but if you have a direct connection to the modem it works for sure because when a modem sends data its sent to a router and then that's passed to the netgear device that connected to the modem and you'll get that data.
