Are VPN illegal at school?
Can I use a VPN to get around school policies and privacy settings?
What if they have a filter on my browsing activity? Which devices would be blocked at school? Are VPNs even legal at school? Let's discuss it. If you have been thinking about using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to 'escape' internet restrictions at school, you're definitely not alone. These programs aren't necessarily illegal, but they're certainly frowned upon - at least within the education industry. In order for us to understand why and how these programs don't really work, and why it's not appropriate to use a VPN at school, we need to first explain why this whole idea even makes sense in the first place.
Why does my school want to block web access? There are a couple of reasons why schools block certain websites. Mostly you will see filters or a school-wide DNS that force users to go to a particular domain instead of any other website. Usually, this domain is an address with which their filtering system has been made.
These domains aren't always related to the country you live in, either. It can be an address registered in a country that you want to bypass. One of the most common use cases is to force users to access a website where the school will pay per student using the service. You'll often find a section on these websites, called 'Pricing', where the cost of services is listed.
Most likely, these websites won't allow you to actually access the sites using the services provided, which means it's likely you won't be able to use a VPN because it would also mean you'll be using one of these filtering domains. Also, as discussed in this blog post by Cisco, a VPN will often change the user's location. If your school or school district is based in India, then even if you are in the US, but your IP will show you as located in India, it will still be blocked.
For all these reasons, it's unlikely that you would get past the restrictions and then successfully use a VPN while at school. Why does my school want to monitor my activity?
Which VPN is unblocked for school?
It is really getting frustrating.
I have VPN on my Android phone but it is not working with the schools Wi-Fi.e. I tried to use the built-in VPN and I can not connect to the Wi-Fi, even on my phone I can not connect to their Wi-Fi.e. Can someone please help? I really need a work around or a solution.
I can connect to their Wi-Fi, once I get logged into the login screen of the Wi-Fi, then after that I can not connect to any other Wi-Fi I tried in a local area. Please help! I have the same problem, when I try to connect to the school Wi-Fi through the built-in VPN app or my computer's VPN app, I always get an error message: "Can't establish a connection". When I tried using ExpressVPN on my computer, it was working properly but if I try to connect with my phone, it still give me the same error message. If I disconnect from the ExpressVPN, I can connect to other Wi-Fi without any problem.
I'm having a similar issue but after switching my phone from my home wifi (with my own internet) to the school's wifi, I can't connect with my ExpressVPN on my iPhone 5s. It just shows "Can't establish a connection" and it doesn't go past the login screen. The only thing I have left is my home network and it has no problem accessing the expressvpn. I have to wait till tomorrow and see if they fix it so that I can actually go to school. If anyone else is having this problem, I would appreciate it if you help me.
Same problem as me, got it solved. The problem was with iOS and you need to go to App Store and Update the app. That way the updated version works.
I followed this to make it work. I changed the DNS server. I used Google DNS and it worked.
Also try making a new connection profile every time and check the connection settings. Mine is automatic to connect to Wi-Fi networks but if I forgot to do this then it won't connect. Also I've noticed that I had to manually enter WPA Passphrase each time I set up the connection profile.
I'm in Canada, and the connection to school Wi-Fi works perfectly with ExpressVPN.
How do I use a VPN if my school is blocked?
By using a VPN, you're essentially creating a tunnel for your connection.
Your school network is trying to block you from accessing the internet, so when you connect to a VPN, your device connects to the VPN server and all your traffic is tunneled through the VPN. This means that your school's network can't see what you're doing, so you won't be blocked.
You can use a free VPN to get around school's firewall, or you can pay for a premium VPN, like NordVPN, which has servers in over 40 countries, so you'll never be blocked. It's important to note that using a VPN is not a safe way to access the internet, because you're trusting an unknown third party with your information. Always use a VPN only when you're on public wifi or your own home network.

Follow Katie. I have always used vpn but I'm wondering if I should be worried about my network administrator checking up on me if I use it. I'm not sure if they are doing this to protect my network or to keep me from getting into trouble. It seems to me if they are doing it for a reason they would at least tell me why.
We use the Windows client and it is definitely worth it. I'm on public wifi and I don't care if my network administrator checks up on me. I'm just trying to stay safe online and I'd rather not get into trouble.
I use a VPN to keep my parents from knowing what I'm doing on the internet.
